Chilly Monday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Chilly Monday

Postby PeggyinCT » Mon Nov 18, 2019 9:30 am

Good morning Everybody from chilly Hartford, CT. I’m loading up my Trek and plan to leave for Florida on Wednesday. Lots of last minute details. Packed up most of my winter gloves, hats, scarves and woolen socks to take to the senior center. I used to hike, ski and snowshoe in the winter, so I have a lot of warm clothes. Used to exchange Christmas gifts with my outdoor buddies, so the clothing is good quality and just sitting in my closet. Keeping a hat, scarf and gloves because Florida can get cold in January. Enjoy today. Peggy

Peggy, good idea to keep some warm clothes in your RV because you never know. I had to buy a sweater at a horse sale in Oklahoma in August one time. I don't know what was wrong with me for the last campout. I should have put in a heavy coat and a sweat shirt but didn't. I was wearing 3 jackets and had to ask someone to pick me up some legging to wear under my jeans. What area are you going to? I signed up for the Hillsborough River campout in March. Hope I can walk by then. It looks like we are headed into the 70's again this week which is fine with me.

I was excited a few years ago when they put in a Whole Food store in Lafayette. My first trip I bought some cranberry scones that were tasteless. I have bought a few things there but haven't found anything that I would buy again. When Harold was in rehab in Baton Rouge I went to the Whole Food store there and liked their baked goods. I guess it depends on the store.

I see Frosty way out in the pasture in front of the house. He's the great white hunter. lol A couple of weeks ago he was coming across the yard with a rat and I wouldn't let him in the house. Guess he thinks I'm ungrateful.

Tonight I have a meetup with the group that eats out. We are going to a pizza place. I haven't had pizza in a while.

Morning Peggy and Martha. Good to see you're about to head out for your winter, Peggy. I hope Florida is good to you. And, Martha, you're going to Florida, too. Sounds like it'll be a fun time.

I just discovered a weather app for travelling. I've only spent a minute on it, but I'm impressed... It's available for both Android and Apple. I didn't look at what the more options are you have to pay for. It's simply called Highway Weather.

Sun is out but supposed to get cloudy this afternoon, it is aroind 45 outside. However it is supposed to warm up to the sixties by the end of the week before another cold front comes through. Let the clouds come, I'm headed for a nap!
Martha, I don't blame you for not letting Frosty in with his gift!!

Has anyone heard from carolb. I haven't seen her post or anyone mention her in quite some time. Did she give up traveling?

The problem with scones in the U.S. is that they are dry and not at all like the British scones, which are served at tea, sliced in half and filled with strawberry jam and a large portion of the thickest, richest whipped (clotted) cream you have ever seen. You cannot even buy cream that thick over here. They melt in your mouth! Also, in the U.K. scones are served very, very fresh, not after they have been sitting around so many hours. Check out this photo for an example: https://www.countrylife.co.uk/food-drin ... ream-90151

Way back in 2002, I took my mother on the QE2 for a cross-Atlantic trip to London as a reward for letting me sell her home and move her into Senior housing. ON this wonderful, old ship, they had tea every afternoon at 4 pm, served by waiters wearing white gloves and bearing huge trays of little sandwiches, but the best were the trays of freshly made scones with jam and clotted cream. Had them every night even when it spoiled our dinner!

Left two messages for my doctor and waiting for a return call regarding my test results from last week. It is miserable to wait, but at least it is warmer today at the state park in Ohio I am staying at. I did drive over to my son's house yesterday and saw their new kitten. Adorable and very busy, but a bit afraid of the dog, who mostly just stares at her. Did not like dog licking its chops at one point, however. Kitty better get big fast so it can stand behind its hisses! (Dog is kept in kennel and cat locked in den while humans are out of the house. They also have been locking kitty in the den so she can sleep often during the day. They have a very big house, and she is a very tiny 9 weeks old, so they don't want her to get into too much trouble.)

She looks big here, but is really very small.

Good news!! PET scan was negative so I can head south. He wants repeat tests at 3, 6, and 12 months, but I can do that in Florida at Cleveland Clinics there. YEA!! Palm trees here I come.

Just need to check out thyroid which showed some hyperactivity. Will call doctor tomorrow morning, but plan on heading out on Wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed she will not want more tests that will delay me.

Hi everyone!

Peggy, that is exciting that you are going to FL. What area will you be in? Martha, so glad to hear that you are going back to the Hillsborough River gtg. Beth, I can't wait to see more pictures of your casita after you get things rearranged the way you want. BJ, Carolb hasn't given up traveling. Just spending this winter at her home in upstate NY. I have a feeling that she'll be putting lots of miles on her Roadtrek when she's ready. Judy, I'm so glad you got good results from your doctor and can start heading south.

The sun finally arrived in Ocala and we saw temperatures above 70, which was a welcome relief, after having temperatures in the 50's with lots of overcast skies for the better part of a week. The chill and clouds totally zaps me of every ounce of energy I have.

So glad you got your test results and can head south! I know you must be relieved. If you can find a good acupuncture person they may be able to bring your thyroid levels to normal. I am always looking for a good scone recipe to try and so I checked out your link to the video. He sure talks fast! I looked up all the conversions of grams to cups etc and 500 grams of flour is 4 cups which seems like quite a bit to the other ingredients. Also it says bake at 200 degrees, I'm thinking that is 200 on the British stove. I think I'll try it using 2 cups of flour and baking at 400 for 15 minutes. Anyone have thoughts?

All I know is that the British scones are light and fluffy and always very fresh, but never any dried fruit in them. You can also serve them with fresh sliced strawberries, but you need to put on lots of whipped cream! (Might have to walk an extra mile to wear off the calories, but it is worth it.)

I read something the other day that Northers don't know how to make good biscuits can't actually it's a southern thing
went on to say that it's due to the flour used ie the grain the flour came from that the if I remember right the southern grain is a softer wheat and the flour used in the north comes from hard wheat .... just thought I would add in that two cents worth   and a person might find the same difference with scones from UK and what is made in US I've heard of them but never have been to the UK so have no idea BJ you might do a google search and see if you can find authentic scone recipe perhaps there is one on allrecipes.com a good start anyway...
boy was I in a to do not much mood... had to force myself out of the house... not sure why just simply didn't want to do much of anything... did get to singles took butter as did 3 others brought mine home... didn't even set it out... got ice and water dumped got propane tanks filled didn't know how low the one was didn't want to run out of it and not get my hot chocolate  and knew the other was empty... and the small tank had used in Utah when it was so beastly cold so filled it as a matter of principal.. now to get it over and the buddy hooked up just in case we do get the predicted rain and cold... best do that in the AM as in the later afternoon it's suppose to change.. want to go to RV Lifecenter and see if by chance they will have a lock that will work on my hitch doubt it but can't hurt to look... need to put up my signs as they are in the truck and don't want to take them out when I go to Vegas at the end of the week... I was not liking it last week as I thought I had missed the pancake breakfast one of the churches has... heard it advertised for Sat so think I will get everything loaded up and stop by there on my way out of town... hopefully the weather will be decent plan on going through Lake Havasu so I can stop at Hobby Lobby and get some yarn so I can start my nephew's afghan looking forward to this one just hope it will look as I visualize it.
Peggy it was good hearing from you enjoy your time in Florida... Judy safe travels hope you get on the road soon

Was lazy this morning and hung out in bed looking on-line for garden stuff for my patio.

Work was pretty steady but felt like a long day.

Still a very warm day today (90*) but that will change tomorrow. A cold front is moving in and bringing rain to much of southern California. We are supposed to get a little rain here in the desert starting tomorrow evening thru Thursday morning. We sure need it! The temps on Wednesday and Thursday will barely get to 70, so that will be a big change! So will be switching from AC (during the day), to heat (at night).

Judy, so happy about your test results. Safe travels south!

I think I had a scone once. The jelly and whipped cream on it sounds delicious! Something about "clotted cream" that sounds kind of nasty :o . Will stick with calling it thick whipped cream.

Off to bed soon! Need to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for golf in the morning!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Judy, glad you got good news and can head South. The English scones look like biscuits. My scones come out dry but they taste ok. I can't make good biscuits either. World Market sells little jars of clotted cream. It must be better fresh because I didn't care for what I bought.

That's a cute kitten. I would let CC sleep like that when he was little and now he wants me to hold him so he can sleep. He gets mad if I move.
