Ah, yes, those kerbs! I once tore out both front and rear tires on one of those! Bicyclists and a large oncoming lorry were involved -- and I'd only been driving for about half an hour.

It was fine, though. I walked across to a pub to phone the AA, discovered I would have a three-hour wait, and sat under a big shade tree, sipping a glass of ale and watching a local cricket match. I still don't understand cricket, but that was a lot of fun. :D

I could see my car from where I was sitting (I'd eased it into the forecourt of a shop). It was fun to watch passers-by do a double-take, then walk over for a closer look. Then they'd notice the rental plates, shake their heads, and walk on. Tourists, eh?

The little roads are wonderful! Lots to look at, and you never know what you'll run across. . . I accidentally found a falconry centre in Wales. That was the first time I saw a hawk fly to the lure and to the fist. Astonishing! If you're in an area with hedge rows, watch out for crossings, because you truly cannot see what's coming! Also, sometimes they paint roundabouts on ordinary corners.

If you get a chance to get a close look at any of the big wind turbines, I'd like to hear all about it. I hear that Scotland is now generating twice as much power as it needs. I wonder how they're handling distribution?

Oh, and you do know that if you get caught up and lose your reservations for the night, it's not likely to be a problem, right? Ask at the local tourist centre, or the police station or pub. A surprising number of people have a spare room, are willing to host someone for a night, but aren't listed with any reservation organizations.

Louise, that last bit of information is good to know.....one never knows what might happen. It is so good to have a plan B, C, D, etc to fall back to.

I also blew a tire on one of those double-digit roads! In my case, a big bus came around the corner, and I panicked, hitting the curb. However, I had a UK phone and called the rental car company for road service. The guy in the wrecker picked me up and took my to a Scottish tire shop and it was one of the best experiences. The mechanics asked where I was headed and when I told them, they started recommending restaurants. Apparently, I was passing the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and they insisted I needed to stop and have some salmon or oysters. This company is famous for shipping oysters all over the world!

Regarding the rental car, I had almost forgotten the following:

- Check with your credit card companies to see if they will cover the extra coverage on your rental car. Also find out the deductible. Your personal car insurance will cover you in the US, but not in other countries, so your best bet is to make sure you use a credit card that covers the rental car deductible so you can deny the expensive extra coverage.
- If one of your credit card companies WILL cover that, ask them to send it to you in writing, make a copy to take with you.
- If you blow a tire, you will probably have to buy one on the spot, but should get reimbursement from your credit card company.

Make sure you make copies of your passport, credit cards, insurance policies, and such and take a copy with you in a different place where you store the real documents, then leave copies with a relative or friend. And do try to take three-digit roads and avoid two-digit roads as much as possible. There will be much less big bus and truck traffic to scare you off the road!!

And, as havingfunnow and I have pointed out, even what might seem like a disaster can turn out to be a pleasant and memorable event. Enjoy!!

Tad warm here for campfire, at 100 today, but I'll always sit around near and chat. I spent the day caring for a sick kid? Yeah he's 39, but he's still my kid. Woke yesterday with temp 102.6 andalusia as a ghost. Fever finally broke but he's still got headache. Amd I'll not be pleased if he shared the bug with his Mom!

Velda:

Hope your son is feeling better soon, and that he didn't "share".

104 degrees here at my house this afternoon (September 25), and windy. Still 92 degrees after dark at 8:30 p.m. when I went out to walk Big Joe.

Spoke to a friend that lives up in the foothills, she said her electric was turned off yesterday afternoon (Monday) at 5:00 p.m. by Pacific Gas and Electric, due to high fire danger in her area (many foothill communities here also had their power cut). She said she was told her power might be off for 3 days.

104 degrees with no a/c for 3 days.

Ugh.

Oh Anne, thats terrible for your friend to have no power. The power company doesnt consider frozen foods or comfort in the high heat. I could not live that way without control over the situation. So sorry for your friend.

The power company IS considering the people who are in areas where wildfires could happen. Turning off the electricity is better than the results of the fires last year. It was a lesson learned from those fires that it’s better to turn off the electricity than have the transformers and lines cause fires. It’s better than having whole towns burned to the ground, acres destroyed and people killed. Hopefully people will be able to get to places with A/C and their food will be OK in their refrigerators and freezers if kept closed as much as possible. It’s something people have to bear in the hope of keeping them and their homes safe.

I hope the rains come and power is able to be restored. Do many of these people have generators?

Stoking the fire for you ladies that are getting some cold temps, and some with possible snow too, depending on where you are.

Lyn, glad to hear your angio said arteries are good. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you on the lung tests too.

Judy sorry your shingles are so painful, but hoping the drugs have given you some relief by now, and hope you dont have any lasting side effects. Mom had them a few years ago in her eye and now she says her eye continually feels like there is sand in it. I got the shot as soon as I could, so fingers crossed here too.

I'm still in Ohio, just south of Columbus. Shorts and T-shirt weather here, but I'm also staying ahead of any fall color changes.

That's it from me. Stay safe and warm ladies.

Campfire was almost off the page and with alot of the country waiting for the cold snap, if they haven't gotten it already, I think we could use a fire.

Left Hot Springs a day early to avoid the sleet/ freezing rain they are expecting tomorrow. Avoided OK too. Tina, sure hope you're bringing warm clothes for your dog show there.

I'll be in TX now for about 2 months. Time to get Ford inspected and plates for both the Ford and trailer. Kind of glad to be out of the out of the mid-south. Had another break-in on the Ford while parked in Hot Springs looking at the bath houses. No damage and nothing taken thankfully. I guess they didn't want wood for under the trailer jacks and foam cover for the truck in the event of another hail storm. Between last Spring's LA accident, and truck break ins KY & AR, I'm definately not a fan of the south so far.

That's about it from me. Have a good night ladies and stay warm if you'll be in the cold spell.
