Friday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Friday

Postby SoCalGalcas » Fri Sep 06, 2019 10:57 am

Day of the wedding! I am in an RV Park on the Washington side of the Columbia River. It his expensive, however, has wi-fi and cable, so I am enjoying amenities I do not usually have.
The kids are all here, scattered in hotels around the area. I spent time with the ex and his wife yesterday.
Wedding is at 4:00 so several of Gus will be meeting for lunch prior. I am never sure who is going to be where as there are so many scattered around.
Happy occasion. Lyn

Lyn, sounds like a fun time! Hope the wedding goes without a hitch! You are lucky to have such a great family!

Taking my time getting going today. At least I am out of bed and dressed! Just some stuff around the house today and then get to Curves. Been almost a week since I was last there. Too many other things got in the way this week.

The fire is 20% contained and has been held to 2000 acres since early yesterday, so that is good news! They are saying it should be fully contained by Tuesday. No homes destroyed, only a few had some heat damage to the outside. So far so good, other than the Preserve. When I hiked there before, I could see burn scars from a previous fire. Hopefully, the visitors center didn't get damaged, The fire was coming very close to it the first night.

Will be glad when the humidity is finally gone next week! It has been wreaking havoc on my joints!

I am scheduled for 4 days next week (instead of my usual 3), so that will help some. I need to make a little more money than I have been making. Should start getting busier now as fall approaches and the snowbirds start making their way back down here. A few of them have already come back here to the park in the last week or so.

I better get moving here...have a good day! :D
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Just dropped my visiting friend off at the airport shuttle. She helped me strip bed and I changed mine so got two loads of laundry to do today. Really sore muscles from walking around Muir Woods and then Alcatraz. Whew.

Here in Napa until Monday then back to Eugene for doctor appt and new supply of pills for next month. Get cat scan and bone marrow biopsy at October appointment so not looking forward to that!!

We called both Mel's sister and my younger son on a 3 way call yesterday. Grand kids were there with my son. Had a good chat about Mel and his first year across the veil mark. After, Chris and I went to Cheesecake Factory for supper as it was a favorite of Mel's. I had the best steak Diane! All in all it was a good day filled with memories.
I've been to Curves and showered and JV football begins at 5. Will have my new bleacher seat in tow.

Where did this week go??? I guess it went fast because of Monday being a holiday and I was out of town for this holiday. I cannot believe the weekend is here already.

Worked out in the yard for a bit trimming up some much needed bushes. I only work in the mornings as it gets quite warm in the sun. Would like to get most of my trimming done this coming week as it is going to be in the 70's for about 4 days so I should be able to get most of it finished. I want to get everything in shape before the end of the month when I go to the Pow Wow as the weather can surely change.

Have fun at your wedding Lyn, we will definitely miss you at the Pow Wow this year.

Hoping there will be some new shows on this fall that will be worth watching. So many stupid shows in my opinion. Good thing I like to read.

Karen, I agree with you about some of the stupid shows on now. The game shows they have come up with are really stupid. Some of them look like a good way to hurt someone.

There were some things I would have liked to do outside but it is like an oven when I walk outside. It got up to 102 and it's still 102 at 6:00. I think Hank might get his walk at 7:00.

Yes, this week went fast. Doesn't seem like it should be Friday. The meetup group is having breakfast in Lafayette tomorrow. I don't feel like trying to make it to Lafayette at 9:00 on a Saturday.

Barbie, the fire near you made the national news tonight. Hope they can get it under control.

I bought some of the Cape Line drinks they are advertising on TV. They make these things sound like they would be good but they taste like funny beer to me.

Regarding fires--I have been using this map for the past couple of weeks, and it is very helpful: https://www.fireweatheravalanche.org/fire/

I was up early and worked hard today. We have a new post office and went today to get the mail (after the manned area was closed) and my key didn't work. :( It's only open an hour tomorrow morning and doubt I'll get there in time so need to sort that out next week. Meantime I'm exhausted but afraid if I go to bed this early I'll be up super early tomorrow. Guess that would get me to the post office in time lol.

Lyn, it looks like the wedding and all before, etc, are a good time.

As for tv, I'm stuck on Hallmark movies... Yes they all have similar stories and you know the ending from moments after starting to watch, but with everything going on in the world, I need the feel good aspect these days.

After the quite cold, wet spring it looks like we'll have a warmer than usually end of summer/start of fall here.

Four weeks and I'll be on the road. I'm so looking forward to getting together with Karen (retiredhappy) and her daughter then moseying along.

I pretty much just watch HGTV, TLC and the Travel Channel. Nothing else worth watching.

Nothing accomplished today...will try again tomorrow

Still 3 digit hot here every day. Yup! Those Hallmark movies & mysteries are surely addictive! We'll start getting Christmas ones again in no time! After awhile I get a little sick of them, but I still watch them! Something safe, warm and cozy about predictable feel-good movies.

Bored with over-the-air or cable/satellite tv? Check out Roku and YouTube.

Roku is available at Walmart. Buy it at Walmart, keep your receipt, don't like it, return it. I love Walmart because it has a "no questions asked" return policy - I think it's 30 days, but check with your local Walmart to be sure. The Roku is from about $29.00, no monthly fees.

https://www.roku.com/products/players

Mostly I watch YouTube videos via my Roku. I have had nothing more than a Roku box for my television watching for the past eight years. And I ALWAYS find something interesting to watch!!

I watch YouTube on my 42" 4K tv set, using my Roku box. All of the programming I watch on YouTube is FREE. The Roku box costs from $29.00. Once you have your Roku, that's it. There is NO monthly fee (unless you wish to subscribe to "Premium" channels).

Setting up the Roku box is dead easy. Basically, "plug and play". Last time I checked, you do need to enter a credit card number - but this is only so that if you want to rent a movie. I have had Roku - and NO cable, satellite or tv antenna - for the past eight years.

I realize that those of you who are "full timers" probably don't have access to the bandwidth required for YouTube, but those of you at home - there is, literally, a "channel" for whatever interests you. Sometimes it can take a bit to find your "niche" on YouTube, but, trust me on this - it is there, and you are missing it.

Many - if not most of the "shows" below are in HD or 4K (high definition).

Here are my favorite "channels" (some of these upload a new "show" every day - "shows" generally last from 1/2 hour or so +/-, with commercials only for a minute or so at the beginning):

RVerTV (natch!)
Jeff Horchoff (beekeeping)
Swedish Homestead (homestead farming in Sweden)
Apau Hawaii Tours (LOTS of videos on the Kilauea eruption in Hawaii)
Fredrick Dunn (beekeeping)
Vino Farm (beekeeping)
Pecos Hank (stormchaser - tornadoes)
Vet Ranch (veterinarian helping ill and injured animals)
Michigan Rocks (rock hounding in Michigan)
Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (rehabilitating ill and injured raptors - birds of prey, including Bald Eagles)
Home Made Home (refurbishing/rebuilding derelict houses)
Most anything to do with volcanoes
Nicole Hanna (wire-wrap jewelry making)
628 Dirt Rooster (beekeeping)
Swan Lake (maybe a dozen or more full-length versions of the famous ballet)
& Etc.!

Ps. You will notice that I seem to like beekeeper videos, which is odd - I don't particularly like bees, I am allergic to bee stings, and I don't like the taste of bee honey and never eat it. But I find the bee keeper videos fascinating and often quite funny.

Check out Roku and YouTube if you are bored with being spoon-fed what the cable industry WANTS you to watch, and not what you, personally might CHOOSE to watch - if you had the choice!

You'll be glad you did.

Anyone else on here love Roku?

I do have a Roku box that a friend gave me several years ago. I had trouble finding anything interesting on there. I never checked out YouTube on it tho. Is that different than watching YouTube on my laptop? I mostly watch how-to videos on there on my laptop. Maybe I need to dig it out and try it again.

Hi Barbie.

Programming available on Roku is always evolving - new stuff is being added all of the time (almost every day), so if you haven't tried Roku in several years, you might give it another shot.

Here is a list of Roku channels (some of these are pay, most are free - I only watch the free ones):

https://channelstore.roku.com/browse/movies-and-tv

When I first signed up for Roku in about 2011, Roku had about 300 "channels". Now there are literally thousands (and this doesn't count YouTube). When you find your Roku and get it going, let me know and I am happy to post instructions on how to add programming/channels.

Anyone else interested, just ask! Also happy to share my personal list of FREE Roku channels.

Probably watching YouTube is not a lot different watching on your laptop or tv.

Except. . . on your TV the picture is larger, brighter, clearer (HD), with better sound. . . and you don't have to balance a laptop on your lap. So you can do what I do - leave YouTube running on my TV while I get up to get a snack, and don't have to put the laptop down!

:D And, if you want, you can be watching Roku on your TV and surfing the internet on your laptop both at the same time.

Depending on the age of your Roku, there are advantages to getting a new, up to date model, as well. We have one I bought for Mel for Christmas probably 5 years ago. Because he only used it in our bedroom, it meant Chris and I were left out. After Mel died, I barely turn on tv in our room, so suggested Chris move the Roku to living room. He began checking and learned how much more capable the newest one is, so next time in Costco, we bought the newest model. It has lots more features including, find the remote. Push a button on the part hooked to tv and it makes the remote beep until you locate it in a crevice of your chair or under a blanket  ! We use our Roku daily. Lots of older tv shows you can watch, many of which are on during season at same time as another show we like, so we can have plenty to watch ESP during summer when shows are on hiatus. Instead of cable, most of which programming we aren't interested in, we have Netflix and Hulu, which together cost less than cable, plus our Roku. Tv is off during day but we do like to watch during and after supper.
