Best Pedometer or Fitness Tracker

Postby JudyJB » Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:36 am

I really need something to track my distance walked each day. My stamina is lousy and I cannot blame it on low red blood cell count anymore. (Darn!) I used to have a pedometer many years ago, but it was not very accurate. What about a Fitbit? My kids and one grandson has one of those. Any advice? I don't think I want to wear something on my wrist all the time, but I would like something for when I get out and walk or go on tours such as I did on Sunday. Not too expensive, either.

I have a Fitbit and really like it. There are also apps for your phone that will do that.

I've been using an app on my android called Pedometer Step Counter that I've found pretty accurate.

I have an iPhone, so I will look around. How does it tell how far you are walking?

All of them (that I've used) figure distance based on the average length of your step. If you don't program that, it'll go by the average person's step. Being short with shorter steps, I have to go more steps than someone with a longer stride to go the same distance.

I use my iWatch. I guess since it uses GPS, no programming needed.

Does a fitbit work the same as the iWatch?? As you can tell, I really have no idea about these devices. The old pedometer I used was a pain as I had to keep calculating my steps. I also had to keep it in the same spot in my pocket all the time, so I gave up on it. But this was about 15 years ago, so I suspect they have gotten better.

Judy, on iPhone , look for the included app which is a red heart on a white panel which says health. You open that app and allow it to measure so any time you have it on you, pocket or belt loop, it tracks your steps (it has a gyro in phone that senses your movement). Yesterday mine was off in count from my fitbit because at times iphone was sitting on table charging as I moved around. I liked my fitbit one but they were discontinued but I would not look for one still on sale simply because they have a sealed in battery and any left on shelf have a old battery. I wear my fitbit as my watch on my wrist. I've worn a watch since I was 12 so I'm used to that. I charge it every 2-3 days just because I prefer it not to be below half. There are smaller fit bits than the Charge 2, renamed with update as Charge 3 and there are larger watch shaped models. I carefully considered apple watch vs fitbit watch vs all their other models and decided I didn't think fitness watches were quite where I wanted them to be (fall 2017) yet so comparing features- I wanted heart rate for when I do Curves, I chose Charge and have been happy. You don't have to wear it all the time but i do because it shows how active I am through day and at about ten min to the hour up it reminds me how many more steps I need to reach 250. Sometimes I just get up and walk my hall to reach that 250 if I'm close. Doing 250 steps every waking hour is not a lot but builds up. I think you might be able to set that 250 lower until you build up stamina, possibly by lowering the daily goal-mine is10,000 but at one time I had it half that so my hourly goal was way less.

I believe in maybe two years I'll upgrade to a apple iwatch but I'm not ready now.

I love my little Fitbit Zip it clips to your pants or if you have pants pocket it will work there. Really easy to set up, I bought a couple of really cheap ones and they were too complicated for me to set up. I've even washed mine a couple of times and it still works. You get a weekly report on the number of steps abd you can see the numbers anytime on the device. They are hard to find now but I like it because I didn't want to wear something on my wrist.

Judy, for the iWatch with GPS and LTE, you obviously wear it on your wrist, and for an outdoor walk it will track time, active calories, total calories, heart beats per minute and distance. Doesn’t matter where your iPhone is. Plus you can get phone calls, texts and notice of emails on the watch while you’re out walking - again without your iPhone. I like that because I dislike carrying my phone around. It will measure for different types of exercise such as running, cycling, stair stepper, hiking (measures elevation too), etc. As long as you’re wearing it, it counts steps, movement/calories, minutes of exercise, if you stand each hour. It probably does more, but this is what I’ve used it for.
