Haircuts and Itchy Necks - Advice Needed

I am really sensitive to the little pieces of hair that get down your neck after you get a haircut. I often go home and take a shower and wash my hair after a haircut. And once, in my motorhome, I even took a shower and rinsed my hair in a parking lot! I don't want styling with my very short hair, but I often ask the hairdresser to blow the little hairs off before I leave.

So, yesterday, I got a haircut. Because I am constantly traveling, I almost always get my haircut by someone new. She did a good job on my hair, but I think she shaved my neck because even after going home and taking my usual post-haircut shower and washing my hair, my neck is still bothering me. I was not paying attention, so I don't know if she used an electric or a regular razor or what she did.

So, this is mostly for Barbie and those of you who have my sensitive neck problem: What do I tell the next hairdresser to prevent this neck problem? If I have hair on my neck, what can I tell them to do so as not to itch and feel these sharp little things for several days afterwards? It is driving me crazy this time--even more than usual. I have tried baby powder, and that helps a little.

Some people are very sensitive to the trimmer on their neck and ask me not to use it. It is hard to get very close tho with just the scissors. Maybe ask them not to cut it all the way to the skin and use a # 1 or #2 clipper guard instead. They most likely used a trimmer, not a razor, as cosmetologists aren't licensed to use a straight razor, only barbers are. Also, it is possible her trimmer blades were not real sharp (just like if you shave your legs, etc with a dull razor that can cause bumps and irritation).

For loose hair on your neck, you can ask them to use a towel under the cape around your neck to help keep the hair off.

Try using hydracortizone cream on it for the itching.

Thanks. I was not really even paying attention, but I think you are right it was a clipper. And I can see where a towel would help. I have had my hair cut there by someone else a couple of times and no problems.

I forgot about cortisone. I will dig some out.

There is an over the counter ant-itch analgesic lotion that is camphor and menthol called Sarna. When my sisters hair grew back after chemo this is what her oncologist recommended It relieves itching associated with dry skin, insect bites, poison ivy/oak/sumac, sunburn
and soothes irritated skin. I use it on my eczema. I purchased it at Fry's pharmacy in Yuma and at Wal Mart here in Minnesota. Rita
