The cat is now out of the bag...

I just bought a park model home in Palm Springs!

Actually it is in Indio right next to Joshua Tree National Park. The community is a gated RV resort with park models and RV lots, and you buy your land with the house so no lot rent. The house is a one bedroom, one bath, with vaulted ceilings and skylights, a california room facing the back yard, and is about 20 years newer than mine. It needs absolutely no work other than my own personal touches. It is on a greenbelt with a gazebo out back. The HOA is $320 per month which includes sewer, water, trash, electricity, cable, and yard/park maintenance. We agreed on $75K with a contingency on selling mine. I am listing mine for $125K. The homes here are selling fast and for close to or at asking price. Mine will go on the market on April 1st. I will be saving over $1000 per month from what I am paying now.

There is an 18 hole executive (short par 3 holes) golf course and a 9 hole putting course, tennis courts, pickle ball courts, shuffleboard courts, 6 swimming pools, 2 club houses. over 60 activities and clubs, all free to participate in. About 2 thirds of the lots have park models and one third are for RV's who buy their space. Most residents are snowbirds but some stay all year. I am hoping to eventually be able to travel for at least 3 months each summer. Will be able to afford a nice little trailer and of course, a golf cart, which everyone there has. There are lakes, creeks, waterfalls and tons of flowers and grass all over! It is meticulously taken care of.

Oh yeah, the home comes fully furnished, which actually I am not really interested in since most of it is older and not my style so will sell or donate it and put my stuff in there. Except for the bed. She has a super nice soft queen sized bed so I will keep that and sell mine. I already have a job lined up at the Great Clips near there whenever I am ready to move there.

So, lots of work ahead of me but I am very excited! :D

Wonderful! You don't need the extra bedroom and extra bath or a roommate, so one bedroom one bath is perfect!! And the extra money will indeed let you get a small trailer of some sort to travel in. And no flooding creek behind you or homeless people camping out. Perfect!

Good luck on selling your current home and getting moved fast. I can't remember, but did you buy a couch and some furniture for you old "new" place? All that painting and work you did should pay off, I assume.

Wish there were a place like that near my son's home in Napa. If there were, I'd buy a lot super quick, and he would get off my back about driving too much, except I'd probably keep traveling most of the year, anyway.

Congratulations. With such a portable career skill you are able to pick up and move. The green grass and the pool look inviting. Make it through the warm summers and you have it made.

Wow Barbie, What a surprise but it looks like a beautiful home with lots of things to do, I remember you like golf. I am surprised you are moving inland though, your bones must still be thawing from all those years in the cold temps. Hope all goes well and your home sells for what you want.

I plan to get rid of most of what the owner left there except for the bed and a few other things. I will bring my two love seats, coffee and end tables, fireplace, small table and chairs, and some outdoor furniture. I will have a small outdoor porch and a decent sized patio in back.

The current owner lives in Greece and only lives here during the winter months. She is now back in Greece so she was pretty motivated to sell this place so she was willing to come down $5K on the price and agreed to the contingency.

I love the California room which is what really sold me on this place. Most homes just had a large covered open porch. The CA room is insulated so I can heat and cool it and it gives me an extra room in case I have guests over. I can also do some crafts and sewing projects out there. The cats will love it too!

The heat will take some getting used to in the summer but so worth it for the cost savings, the beautiful grounds and all the fun activities to take part in. Like my roommate said to me, this place is too quiet and too "old". I agree.

Congrats Barbie! Looks nice. And no more worrying about squatters behind your current place is a bonus.

Congratulations, Barbie!

The park model and the grounds look quite wonderful. The home particularly nice! :D

The heat will be different for you than in San Diego, but I imagine the cost of living is probably a lot less (San Diego is one of the most expensive cities to live in in the United States).

My father lived for many years in Hemet, Ca., which is not too far from Palm Springs. Hot there, too. He enjoyed the heat, so long as he had good A.C.!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

If this one doesn't work out, check around a bit on Zillow.com or Realtor.com for Hemet, Ca. Cost of living comparatively low there, as well. Hemet also has mobile home parks where one owns the land/lot. That's the way his home was set up, and he was very happy there.

Also, no need for a room mate. Your current one is a “doozy “. Lyn

I love it! And all your reasoning makes total sense. Note for the sale of your current place to go quickly would be awesome!

The only squatters that will be in my new back yard would be ducks!

My roommate is on a month to month lease here. She says she will probably move back with her son after this house is sold.
She is actually a really good roommate except for her propensity for spray painting things without putting down paper or plastic under what she is painting.

I looked at about 10 homes there and kept coming back to this one. Some had great views of the golf course but needed a lot of work inside. Been there, done that, over it! Others were very nice inside and newer but had no yard. Some were just ugly inside and out. This is the only one that had a California room instead of just an open covered porch. It also has a carport, dishwasher and a washer and dryer inside the house (many were out in the shed which I can't imagine doing laundry in a shed that is 150 degrees inside in the summer!), which many did not have those things either. This one had everything on my wish list and was turn key with a nice patio and back yard, and was in my price range. I looked at this one a few weeks ago and then again this week and couldn't stop thinking about it in between. Like they say, "you will know it when you see it". :D
