I remember the oleo with the orange button that you pressed & squeezed the coloring into the rest of the white stuff...was that lard or ??? I remember the ice man bringing ice & we heated our 'flat' with an oil stove...We had cobble stone streets & we played baseball & Kick the Can & all kinds of games on those old stones...I remember when TV first came out & the Hardware store had one in the window....and everyone stood around (outside) just in awe of that new 'contraption'....I remember 15 cent movies on Saturday afternoon and 3 cents for a small carton of milk at school...Ohhhhh .... does anyone remember the 'stretchers' (I think that's what they were called.) My Mom would wash the curtains & then we'd have to put them on these stretchers...there were little pins all around & you attached the curtain on them...Wow! forgot about them...I remember my finger tips were always raw after putting those curtains on....we had a party line too...but I can't remember any thing else about it...that was a longgggg time ago...How come when you're young you look back & say Lord...those were hard times...and as you age & look back ... it seems the older I get & look around to how the kids today are...looking back makes me feel darn lucky that I lived then & glad I'm not a kid in todays world......

I missed the Oleo and the ice boxes but my Aunt had cows so we always had "whole" milk and I have made plenty of butter as a kid. Used to get in trouble for whipping cream too long and it turned into butter-----sweet because it had sugar for the whipped cream and we had to throw it out.

Do ya'll remember party lines where you had your own ring and everyone else could listen to your telephone conversations. Had that up into high school!!

Oh yes,... party lines! And I also remember that the "operator" knew everything because she would listen in on conversations. So,..... it wasn't unusual to just ring for the operator and ask her how this person or that person who was in the hospital or sick was doing,.... or if you heard the fire siren go off to call and ask where the fire was and how bad it was,..... My dad used to work as a lineman for the old telephone company in our small town. I used to be able to hang out with the operator,.... the old plug-in switchboard. She'd let me push the plugs into the holes in the switchboard when the lights would come on. That must have been around 1954-1956.

Okay, got me thinking now... and it hurts!

My grandmother... lived on a farm all her life, until about 10 years ago. She always called butter/margerine Oleo. Guess I never gave much thought as to why. Still don't know... but I'm getting closer.

Same grandma also had a party line... no icebox though, that I am EXPERIENCED enough to remember....

Do ya'll remember the 25# and 50# blocks you used to buy and bust up to make home-made ice cream from that whole milk or milk that was lightly skimmed to take some of the cream off the top!! Of course that was You used to have those big ice tongs to pick them up. Then, of course, it was always the "kids" job to crank it in the old crank ice cream machines!!!

Yep, Fernie - and I cranked and cranked cuz I wanted that ice cream LOL

We never had a party line that I remember at home, but I remember I loved going to my cousins, where I would just pick up the phone to talk to the neighbors LOL - of course, I did that when it was "their" ring - I didn't care who was calling them, just thought it was so cool. I had to be told that wasn't proper etiquette, but luckily their neighbors didn't mind.

I also remember going to the same cousins - they lived on a farm in a small (very small) town and no matter what time of day or night we drove there - they had had 3 or 4 phone calls to tell them we were almost their by the time we pulled up. And I loved the soda machine at the gas station there - had cream soda in those litte bottles. And the general store had a lot of penny candy - better than anything by us in the city. Oh, I loved if we came through during the day and got to stop there first.

And no air conditioning, when we got a tv, it was black and white. Oh, and when we visited on the farm (in Iowa where they do have winter) during the winter, only the downstairs got heated. The upstairs rooms had vents in the floor where the heat rose through. Well, they didn't heat ALL the downstairs, so some of those bedrooms were downright cold. You slept all night, and when you woke up in the morning, you got dressed under the covers and RAN down those stairs to the potty - then to the kitchen where the stove was on and it was toasty warm.

Did any of you make home-made taffy in the wintertime when you were kids? You had to wash your hands real good before they would let you pull it then you would have to put lots of butter on your hands to keep it from sticking. Mom made salt water taffy and molasses taffy. We loved it. You pulled it till it lost it's gloss then rolled it out in a long "snake" and cut it into pieces about an inch long.

Now we didn't do much of the gellato.. but we did the Italian water ices..man they were great in the summertime...gellato was made for special days..and that was rich and very creamy... goood to the last drop too...
We in the city had Trolleys to get around and Subways...and you could ride that subway all day long to almost anywhere ..and for one price LOL well we did ..went to Coney Island and then of course Jones Beach.. and at the time one of my Cousins was head Electrician for SteepleChase at Coney Island.. so we got to do the rides for free..oh man..did I ove them Roller Coasters...LOL

You know when I think about it.. even though some of us keep saying we had nothing..we had more than any of the kids today... we had imagination and we could go anywhere ...with out spending a dime..and active..wow...we used our skates and traveled high speeds..LOL yeah we thought...and boy those Crates made great cars LOL

Flash backs are great...love every time I have one.. and always say.. no matter what happens in this world with the economy I can deal with it...lived through rougher times and it's not important to me to have everything...just have friends you can share your laughs with and a cup of coffee....

God Bless....going out to the rig for tonight....

The roller skates with 4 wheels that expanded as you grew and the skate key on the ribbon around your neck. Radio programs. We all had imaginations then. I think thats why kids don't read as much anymore - they can't picture in their minds what they are reading.

I don't remember having to talk to an operator, but I do remember our # was Glendale 8-2141, and we were on a party line. As kids we learned that if you screwed off the mouthpiece the other parties couldn't hear us. We would listen in on our neighbor, Beulah. She knew we were there, though, and would yell at us to get off!
