Air Card VS Trees with Leaves....

Postby rvgrammy1953 » Wed May 13, 2009 7:15 am

All righty, then..... Have been trying to get here to leave a note since returning from my week with Mom....I can't tell you how many times Ernie's climbed the ladder to the roof of the 5er to find the perfect spot for the external antenna for the air card.....Alas, he's decided that we are about 4 feet off from where we were last year....So getting online is a long and very slow process here in the woods.... :( Hence, my posting is very limited....So here's the deal....I'll keep trying as much as I can to keep up with all of you, but if I'm MIA, don't worry cause I'm still here, just can't post....

Having a grand time with the grand-kids and the kids.....the sale of the extra camper is going smoothly.....and Ernie's mowing lawns.....

Okay, let's see if this will post....hopefully, I'll be able to check back later...

Can't you just walk it outside? I don't have one, so I'm just supposing.

Tell me about the external antenna for your air card....does it improve connectibilty, speed, etc....usually? Where did you get it? I might be interested in one. I only have 2 bars on mine tonight and uploading photos was very frustratingly slow.

I need to know more about the antenna for the air card too. It's always SLOW for me in rural CA, between working off the Edge network and
poor cell reception! The funny thing is that my actual CELL PHONE (same company, same network) is really pretty good. Go figure!

Reporting from the laundry mat in Gettysburg..... (this should help the time go by fast.... ;) )

Okay, the external antenna boosts the reception on the signal in the area....in our case, our cell phone has no service in the campground, but with the antenna on the air card we can, usually, get enough signal to read e-mail and sometimes, post stuff.....same carrier for both items.....we have Verizon and bought the antenna thru their accessory dept....but, it has to be order in store....it should come to you via UPS..... we place the antenna on top of the 5er....we usually use the antenna when we have 2 bars or less....this year since we sold the TT , we are not as deep in the site as we were before, hence, that's reason we are having connecting issues even with the antenna.....so when the leaves are all done coming out, then it may get better....we'll see...

Liz, another thing to try - which I'm about to do - is go to Wilson Electronics and find the right booster for YOUR cell phone. Yes, you need the external antenna also -

Now, the smart thing I was also told by another fulltime rver - was that he called Wilson, got the model he needed for his cell phone, then found it on ebay and purchased there (less expensive).

Supposedly the ones from Wilson are better and do more than the ones the carriers have. I'm just going by what I've been told - but been told it now by several - which is why I'm wanting one. However, it's not necessarily cheap - and if you change phones, some are univeral, some only work for some phones/aircards, etc.

Air cards like cell phones sure can be difficult to deal with. We are having the same problem here. The tower signal is weak ans at time when the wind blows the card cuts off. The best solution, and we've yet to buy one, is to use a signal booster. In some cases a booster will indeed help out in low signal areas.

It sounds like I've been lucky in that I've for the most part been able to get on the internet with my card. In the year I've had it can think of only twice I think that I couldn't connect due to weak signal.. a lot of times I've not been able to use the phone but can the internet. but will bear in mind the booster, thanks for mentioning it
