Anybody Driven Shenandoah Parkway?

I am really planning ahead, but mostly just thinking about driving this in fall of 2019. Has anyone done it and stayed in the campgrounds within the park? I know there are no hookups but was wondering about Verizon service and water and dump stations.

I almost drove this a couple of years ago in April and then changed my mind because the visitor centers and campgrounds were not open because it was too early in the season.

I have driven parts of it several times but the only drive with overnights was last June with Liz. She has traveled it multiple times and can probably best answer your questions. We both have solar so the no electric was not an issue. I think the Verizon connectivity may have been up and down depending specifically where we were camping. Loved the views from the top of the ridges and loved the wildlife. I don't remember any concerns about water and dumping so I am guessing that all was available. I say that because later that summer there were campgrounds up in the Adirondacks that specifically warned you that they had no dump stations. Now we wait for Liz and her knowledge base to chime in!

That's skyline drive... It's not long, maybe a 3 or 4 hour drive and only around 100 miles long. I drove it's entirety several years ago during fall colors, continuing down the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Love the whole thing. Here's a link to info on the cgs in Shenandoah.

I definitely want to continue down the Blue Ridge Parkway, but was going to tackle planning the northern part first.

I am planning on spending next summer in Ohio and Michigan, with maybe a couple of trips into Pennsylvania. And even thinking of circling Lake Superior. Did that with ex and two kids about 35+ years ago. So everything is really just thinking at this point.

The Blue Ridge and Skyline Drive is my favorite route when I am traveling to the NE from Florida, and as Tina said I have done it in parts or in entirety several times. The Skyline drive is a bit narrower and more winding than the Blue Ridge and speed limit is 35 mph, although slower is better in places. And as Beth said, the Skyline Drive is not as long. Fresh water and dump stations are available at the campgrounds. Verizon service is iffy in the campgrounds which are off the highway and wooded, but usually works in the scenic pull-offs along the ridge route. There are usually several sites that are available for large rigs, although I do make reservations when available in the popular ones. Sites are not always level. Fall is a wonderful time to travel that route.
