Arctic Air cooler

It seems to me someone on here (maybe Beth?) has one of these and was happy with it. Since I have no AC in my house, I was thinking of getting one of these for my bedroom at night but wanted to see if any of you have used this or something like it and what your opinion is of it.

Barbie, you might want to look at a free-standing AC that vents through your window. The big-box hardware stores carry them, but you'll have to hustle to get one now that the weather's gotten hot. I don't think that the one you're thinking about will do much of anything. Once that house gets hot it's going to be really, really hard to cool it off. You'll have to get ahead of it and then keep it cool. The big question for you, though, is how many amps you have coming into your house. If it's only 50, you're going to have to be careful not to blow a fuse. If you've got 100amp power you'll be okay. While mobile homes aren't RVs, they're not as well insulated as a regular home, especially the old ones.

You're going to be playing the AC "dance" until mid-October.

Thanks Laura . My problem with getting a regular air conditioner is that the window in my bedroom actually goes into the inside porch area, so that won't work for condensation and venting. That is why I am trying to find an alternative that doesn't need a window. Any other ideas are welcome!

I saw these at our Walmart the other day. I looked up the reviews and they don't have very good reviews.

I saw someone with a vintage travel trailer that had vented one of the portable air conditioners through the floor but you probably don't want to cut a hole in your floor. lol

Sorry, Barbie, I don't have one or know anyone who does. You could look at the freestanding a.c. units. They still need to be vented, but are made to be mobile and I'm betting you could buy an extension for the vent. Jean (sparkle) got one for her trailer when her a.c. died.

Google ductless air conditioners and see what you get. There are other options besides ones that need to be vented through a window.

OK, I have another question. What is in the AC "exhaust"? Just warm air or other stuff? If I were to vent it thru the window out onto the porch, I want to make sure there isn't anything toxic that would affect the kitties (or me) when they are out there. If it is just warm air, then I could go with that option.

The air coming out of the portable air conditioner vent is very warm. They have a tank that collects the water and has to be emptied. I can't remember if you can attach a hose to drain it outside.

I agree with Martha. It would be counter-productive to try and vent it to your porch -- it'll just keep the inside hot. You might consider talking to other residents to see how they handle AC units that can't be placed in a window.

I have the little Arctic Air - I dont think it would be good for what you want it for. The cool air does not go very far into the room. And it goes through a lot of water, especially in a dry climate. I use mine just to keep me cooler when I'm reading, have it on the end table, needs a lot of water if used for a length of time. I got it because Bill gets cold real easy and keep AC around 83 - I just use it when reading and when we're in the RV - keep it on the table blowing right at me. Works fine for that, but will NOT cool a room and will not last a night - shuts off when out of water. Hope this helps.

I decided since I am still in the guest bedroom until I finish the master, to get a regular window air conditioner for that room since it faces the carport. Once I move into the master, I will decide what to do then. Maybe just sleep in the guest room on hot nights.

don't you have a room that a AC unit could be put in? might not be in the bed room but chances are the room would cool down especially with a fan running directing it to where needed
I don't know what your humidity level is but if it's low enough might look into a swamp cooler

Sheila has a good point. When I was first married, way back in the dark ages, we had a newly built home that was only 1,000 square feet. My dad cut a large hole in the wall of the living room (right through the brick), and he framed it out with 2x4s. We installed a window air conditioner in that wall. (It was the only way we could afford AC in those days.) The AC did point down our hallway to the bedrooms, and it did really ended up cooling the whole house. And we did not have to put up with the noise in the bedroom.

Also, they do have AC units made to go in ceilings or even floors that duct out that way. I suspect they are more expensive than a window version, however.

In any case, sleeping in the guest room on really hot nights is a good solution.

I got my window AC unit today but it weighs a ton so I will have to wait until this week to have my handyman help me put it in the window. So will have to live with the heat for another day or so.
