Crater Lake, OR - June 29, 2018

I drove up to the rim of Crater Lake today. It’s the deepest lake in the US (1,943 ft.) and is the cleanest large body of water in the world known for its exceptional clarity and intense blue color. It rests inside a caldera formed about 7,700 years ago when a 12,000 ft. volcano collapsed during an eruption. Here are just a few pictures. Its beauty speaks for itself.

This is Wizard Island. It’s a cinder cone formed in later eruptions.

Still some snow at the end of June.

WOW Sandi you are having great weather up there. We are also experiencing great temps 82° here today. One more full day before I have to head home and back to reality. I always love seeing Wizard island for sure. And the blue is always fantastic

I loved my visit to Crater Lake and look forward to going again. Meantime I'll just sit and stare at your pictures. Thank you.

Thanks for the pictures. I love Crater Lake and want to go take the trolley tour one of these days.

Also, thanks for the info on the shortcut from Bandon to Coquille. Unfortunately, you left out the information about the 7% grade downhill :o

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

What downgrade? Didn’t notice a thing. Just downshifted. Maybe I have my veteran stripes now?

Yes, you have your veteran stripes now. You also didn't have a 6,000 lb trailer pushing you down the hill LOL

You’re right. My Honda Fit probably weighs only a third of what your trailer weighs. But I wanna keep my veteran stripes!!!

I also need to go back there. I was there very briefly. I'll have to check out the Trolley tour.

I'm not into many of these tours. This one is fabulous and I'll do it again next time.

As many times as I have been up there I have never done the Trolley tour. I remember at our GTG everyone loved the tour. You come back out here Beth I will do it with you.

No excuse for me as it is only 1 1/2 hours from my house.

I went on the trolley tour after the Valley of the Rogue GTG in 2012. It was great and you learn so much more from the tour guide who provides insight into everything regarding the crater. When I was there last Friday, however, they were working on the road around the rim repairing the surface and also the pullouts. This required blocking one lane, a flag person and then sending cars through in one direction at a time following a pilot car. Even the trolleys were stuck in line waiting until it was their direction's turn to go. Since I had been around the rim before, I eventually gave up and didn't complete the whole drive. Their brochure said there would probably be delays I imagine this summer.
