I have not posted much about food, but it has been a real challenge. First, as some of you know, I have problems with irritable bowel syndrome, so I have to be careful with what I eat. Mostly, I have been grabbing pastries at Pret a Manger, which is a fantastic UK coffee shop with excellent sandwiches and pastries, everything freshly made and really good. They advertise food with no chemicals and their OJ is bottled but fresh-squeezed.
Anyway, the last 5 days I have been in Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs), so had "home-cooked" breakfasts included with the room rate. (Bad news to begin with sometimes, as home-cooked is not necessarily the best cooked.)
First morning, I ordered scrambled eggs. What can you do with scrambled eggs, right? Well, these looked a little like really runny yellow grits, floating in extra fluid, and piled on a toast round. Looked like they had maybe whisked them in boiling water because they were in tiny pieces floating in something. Ate only part of it. Wish I had a photo. Next day, I figured a fried egg would be safer, and it was pretty good. Had that for two days. This morning this new place had a bigger menu, so I ordered french toast with maple syrup. Except what I got was pieces of egg soaked toast that had been deep fried in some oil that made them taste slightly like fish and chips!! Imagine this with maple syrup! Could only eat a small amount of it. Going back to the fried eggs tomorrow morning. I will be in a hotel for a couple of days and looking forward to pastries again which England does make those well.
Reminds me of the time many years ago I ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad in England. Got the right greens and chicken was OK, but dressing was glops of plain mayonnaise dumped all over it! Yuck.
It has been really cold and I cannot stand to wear my raincoat, which is way too big for me. I did not try it on before i left, and I have lost 35 pounds since I bought it. I found one i really liked today, but it was tight around the shoulders. Good around the middle, but I need to be able to stretch my arms in a coat without feeling confined. Going out again tomorrow morning and trying another store. Bought a thin jogging jacket, but it is not warm enough. I heed a jacket or a very heavy sweater or sweatshirt. Weather is very unpredictable.
Also, missing drinks with ice in them. Found a chicken place with really good chicken and sides so ate there for last two days, and had cold, icy coke from Coke machine with ICE!! Inexpensive, also. No ice tea anywhere except at Starbucks, so might stop there tomorrow on way back to get my car and head north to Stoke on Trent.
