Rock Painting

Postby Azusateach » Tue Feb 20, 2018 12:13 am

There was some discussion here (I think) about rock painting a while back. I've been trying my hand at it, and enjoy it, especially mandalas and "dotting". I like the bright colors, and they make me happy. Here are a few that I've done recently ...

I like the dots. Very creative.

Those are all absolutely beautiful Laura. I hadn’t heard about doing these. Did you take a class? What kind of paint and brushes do you use?

Thanks, Sandi.

Rock painting is THE thing right now, and there are groups all over the place that do all types. Facebook started a movement called "Kindness Rocks", and it's just taken off from there.

I haven't taken any classes, and can't draw very well at all. "Dotting" is a different skillset, and it suits me. I use acrylics, with an occasional acrylic paint pen. I might try using some watercolor pencils, but that would require drawing a picture ... ;)

Dotting uses different types of tools. Some have been hijacked from other venues, such as these punches:

And others come from fingernail art:

It's lots of fun, and quite relaxing. :)

Great job on the rocks....they are beautiful. It is a great hobby. Acrylic paint is cheap, need brushes or other tools like this lady used. Then spray with clear spray paint to seal. Fun for all ages and levels of talent.

Love your art work. I was wondering how you got the dots so perfect. The Louisiana group I camp with is into crafts. They always have something going on at campouts. I have resisted so far but think I could get interested in rock painting. Not that we have many rocks around here. I have found a couple of painted rocks at campgrounds.

I saw some pictures someone had made using the Mardi Gras beads. They were really pretty but above my skill work I think.

You can get a set of acrylic paints and brushes at Walmart for $10. You also need a can of clear spray paint. You can find rocks near a river or beach or even landscaping at a supermarket or park. Just pick up a couple to start. Some people also buy them at Lowes or other stores but they are pretty plentiful in nature too. The rounded ones found near a water source are easier to paint.

Outstanding job. Not sure I could do the dots and know I cannot draw.
Donna had a rock painting table set up at the Hardee Lakes gtg and I think she is planning to do it again at Hillsborough
