I was on a Greyhound bus trip one time, and the guy in front of me turned around and tried to engage me in a discussion of current politics that were not of my flavor.
I kept saying - politely - things like "I'm not interested" and "I don't want to talk about it". Repeatedly. He wasn't taking the hint, and was getting pretty worked up over the fact that I (a total stranger!) was not agreeing with what he had to say.
Finally, at the end of my patience, I said (softly) to him: "Can I ask you a question?"
This seemed to be just what he was looking for, and immediately got a very self-satisfied look on his face. For a second, anyway.
I then said,
very loudly (so that everyone else on the bus could clearly hear me):
"JUST WHICH PART OF 'I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT' IS IT THAT YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND?"That finally shut him up. He even got up and moved several rows away. For a minute, though, it looked like he might hit me. It was worth it, though. Jerk.
