Bottled Water vs. Tap Water

I have been drinking the water from campgrounds faucets and the stuff that is stored in my tanks ever since I started RVing. Haven't had any problems or died yet of some horrible disease. I occasionally toss a little chlorine in it to take care of any potential bugs and then flush it through. I do have a whole-house filter that I change every 3-4 months, and in Florida, I use a secondary filter at my hose, not because I think the water is dangerous, but because it tastes so bad in a lot of places.

This made me laugh - my Dad is a fanatic about Dasani water being the best and I have been teasing him for a long time that lots of bottled water is a sham. My boss once bought water that listed the source as "city of Nashville". We have a well at the house and I bring two jugs of our water when camping for drinking and cooking just because we like it. I did recently purchase a Culligan filter for the rv because I'm also not a fan of funny tasting water. But I haven't used it yet.

My daughter-in-law would not drink the water in her camper in spite of the fact that they bought new, and my son always kept good care of the tank. Finally, he pointed to me and noted to her that I was not dead yet! So, not they are trying to drink tank water.

I have been buying some soft refillable water bottles and freeze them partly full. Then I add more water and it lasts a long time. Hard to find freezable water bottles, so here are the two I use:

It is sad to see people obviously going camping with three cases of water bottles in their carts. At least reusing bottles and drinking tap water makes me feel a lot less guilty.

Bottled water is such a scam, it's tap water from places where the water tastes not-gross. If you live where it isn't disgusting, drink from the tap, if not,drink from a filter. Silly humans.

I don't drink water out of my tank because I usually fill it from the well. Our house is on a community water system so I have some large bottles that I fill in the house and bring with me. I would have to run about 100' of hose to put the community water in my tank and that's too much trouble. If I put water from a city campground I'll drink that.

I think bottle water is a joke too. But I know people in our town who think they have to drink it. 30 years ago when Sean was born prematurely before he came home the doctor wanted a sample of our water. I told him that we were on the rural water system and he told me not to bother with the sample. He thought that we were probably on a well and wanted to test for nitrates and said that our water would be fine for his formula. Therefore I have no qualms about drinking our water. I do bring jugs of our water to drink and make coffee and ice when we're camping because I just don't trust our fresh water tank. We bought the rig used and I have no idea how the previous owners took care of it. I do sanitize it but I'm still leery. Plus I like to be sure that we have plenty of water for the bathroom....I hate that walk to the bathhouse!

I've always know it came from tap water and wondered where they bottled it. There is a very large Pepsi plant about 15 miles from me and until not that many years ago, the water in that town came from a tiny lake and could barely meet the demands of the locals. They have since tapped into Rend Lake Water District but the water tastes really awful!! I am guilty of buying bottled water but I refill bottles from our tap as we have good water here. I do carry bottles with me when I travel because I don't like changing water. I also don't drink from my fresh water tank but do wash dishes. I have a stainless steel Hydro Flask that I really love. I always have some bottled water. I keep a bottle in the car plus a couple of bottles at work, the gym, etc. It's mainly for convenience when I'm out and about. At home I drink the tap water but do have a pitcher to filter the water I use in the coffeemaker (supposedly reduces the need to descale so often).

If I know the water is nasty tasting I will get bottled water...in Q I fill water bottles from the
stand that you get water out of...prefer it and I don't drink water from my tank never have even
though I use the white hoses...just a preference.
in a restaurant I get water with lemon or lime to off set the usually nasty tasting water...it helps

I use my "Clearly Filtered" pitcher at home and on the road -- it gets most stuff out and leaves great-tasting water. I'm not fanatic about it, and I'll skip filtering if the local water tastes particularly good. I try to avoid storing drinking/cooking water in plastic.

I live about an hour's drive from Flint, MI, and I'm sure everybody has read the headlines over the last few years. Most cities east of the Mississippi have equally antiquated water pipes, although few have equally irresponsible/unscrupulous managers -- but I've lost my faith in public water supplies.

I can understand not drinking water anywhere near Flint!

One thing about my motorhome that took me four years to discover is that there are differences in the replacement filters for my whole house filter. My system is made by Flow-pur, and I had been using the same filter it came with, a #4. It was basically a carbon filter that improved taste and got rid of some particles. I have now switched to a #7 or #8, which filters out 99.9% of giaradia cysts. Anyway, the point is that I learned there is more than one type of replacement cartridge and you get what you pay for.
