Where's Liz? Ketchikan

Postby Liz » Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:21 am

The best excursion of the trip was in Ketchikan. Do any of you ever watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel? My daughter is a big fan, so our excursion here was to go out on a crab fisherman’s boat.

Image

The Aleutian Ballard was featured on the first season of Deadliest Catch. It has since been outfitted for tourists to experience the adventure.

Image

The fisherman had fascinating stories about their dangerous days on the Bering Sea, and their personal testimonies are what made this special.

Image

We traveled in calmer waters.

Image

Along the way they demonstrated and talked about their jobs. Here he’s baiting hooks.

Image

Ya never know what you might pull out of the sea.

Image

Whatever came up went into tanks for close up viewing…

Image

...and handling

Image

Next we went to a spot on land & water belonging to Alaskan natives for the very best eagle encounter ever. Nest

Image

Fish on! The eagles were diving and fishing right next to the boat.

In-coming…

Winching in the pot. This one had King Crabs

Anyone want to hold one? Mouth parts up close.

Second pot had multiple critters.

Prawns…tiger and spotted

Back in Ketchikan we had time to tour the town a little

As we slip out of Ketchikan we sit down to enjoy our only sunset in Alaska.

Image

Bear with me now…it lasted a looonng time.

Image

Image

Forgive me…I really like sunsets.

Image

Image

Ok, last one.

Image

In the morning we went under the Lions Gate Bridge into the harbor at Vancouver.

Image
View of Victoria Island (I think). Wished we’d had time to explore, but had an early flight.

Image

Approaching the dock.

Image

Had a clear view of Mt. Ranier as we flew over. People on the other side of the plane could see Mt. St. Helens.

Image

Ok, that’s all of Alaska folks. But don’t worry, I’ll be heading out in my RV in a few weeks.

AWESOME! So glad you had such a great day in Ketchikan!! Loved all the photo's!! I especially loved the one of the Eagle in flight!!
I loved walking along Ketchikans Creek Street, we were there in Sept 2003 and the Salmon were spawning and dead Salmon were everywhere along the creek. It was raining when we were there so did not get to venture out too far but it was a fun day there.
Thanks again for the fantastic photo's!

Oh, Liz, that is so wonderful. I want to go on that tour - I, too, love Deadliest Catch - have watched a couple of the season's all the way through - now just catch it occasionally, but I would absolutely love to do that tour.

Everything else, so breathtaking, also... thanks so much for sharing, you're just whetting my appetite for Alaska!

Your eagle photos are absolutely fantastic!!!! Where I grew up in Seattle the view from my bedroom window was Mt. Rainier. Moved to California and people would say look at the mountain and I would say, "where, you mean those little hills over there?" Flying over Mt Rainier always reminded me of a big ice cream sunday. Have really enjoyed all your pictures.
