I lived in Oceanside and Fallbrook CA for about 2 1/2 years. When I got divorced, I couldn't stay there due to the rents and wages and Fallbrook had lower rents than anywhere else around there at the time (1991). I miss it but I probably wouldn't be able to move back there unless I could find a workcamping job around there after I retire (if that's what I decide to do.) I still have some friends in the area but we have lost touch over the years so not sure what the rents are now.

I understand the desire to live there. It is real. But, cost prohibitive for me. I'm not someone that can rent a room in someone else's house, it's just not for me, but if that's what someone chooses to do to live where they want, more power to them.

Laura, like you, I couldn't live with anyone else either. No how, no way. I admire those that can, but it's just something I couldn't do. I only recently retired and so far, am able to spend the winters in FL and winters in MD. I admire those that can live in these pricy places! I met one a week ago and she was a riot!

In 2000 when I asked about apartment in LA area I was told $1000+ for a studio. They guys that worked there thought $1300-$1400 a month was reasonable rent. Since the job basically paid the same as what I'd make in Indiana, it was not worth the reduction in my standard of living to move.

While I loved my time on the west coast and the time I lived in Washington State (thanks to the Navy). Cost of living wise, I just really can't complain about living in Indiana and the Midwest area.

That "San Diego rent" is 4x the mortgage on my 3 bedroom house. I'd hate to see what the property taxes are like. Bet they are more than the apx. $60 a month I pay in Fort Wayne IN.

I stay here because of the 3 children, 3 grandkids, and 3 greatgrandkids. All live in San Diego. I don't do any of the activities I would do if I win the lottery.
I own a condo which I have rented out. Two bedroom 2bath, 950 sq ft. Property taxes are $1600/yr.
I am very angry at the city for allowing the presence of the homeless to get completely out of control.
The Board of Supervisors gave themselves $19,000/yr raise, then a month later said there isn't enough money to meet our debts!
Enough of my soapbox rant.
