Star Gazing App

Postby IrishIroamed » Sat Jul 09, 2016 7:01 am

Kind of nerdy, but sometimes when outside at night, looking at the stars, I wonder what that is, especially is if I see some pattern.

Chicago Tribune a couple of weeks ago recommended the Star Walk app, but a digital compass is needed.

I found the Sky View app which only needs your location turned on. Point your phone at the sky and the app identifies constellations and planets using your camera. I already confirmed Ulsa Major (which includes the Big Dipper), Ulsa Minor (with the Little Dipper), and Mars. How cool is that!? Can't wait to get away from light pollution so I can try to identify some more. The only thing I don't like is the music, so I just mute it while looking.

Like I said nerdy :ugeek: , but cool.

You little nerd, you!
(I think I have 2-3 stargazing apps, so you do not suffer nerdiness alone...)

Also guilty :)
I use Google Sky Maps - but seems like I changed a setting somehow. Went to use it last trip and the location seemed off. Hopefully I can figure it out soon - love using it at the beach where the sky is wide open.

We knew what you meant...

I have Star Rover and Star Walk.
I only use Star Walk.
What do you mean by a "digital compass is needed"?
Like built-in to your device?

I'm gonna go look at Star View...

Love that app. And you can point it anywhere including the ground and it will show you those constellations too. WOW! Can't believe this posted. cd

Count me in the WomenRV Nerd Club. Since my dad worked for NASA, my family spent a lot of nights looking at the stars. I liked it so much I took Astronomy in college. Thanks for the info on the app.

I have Sky Guide on my iphone.

It buzzes my watch on a 5 min warning when it thinks I should look upwards :)
