Warning--RANT!! A couple of months ago, my laptop slid off my recliner onto the floor and that bent the lid slightly but was apparently working fine other than a funny mark on the side of the screen. Well, three days ago it started flickering so I backed almost everything up and got out my extremely cheap and extremely slow backup computer. Had not used it in two years so had 98 important updates to get updated, and then updated from WIndows 8.0 to 8.1 and finally to 10. Took hours and hours and a couple of really late nights.

I hate, hate, hate Windows 8 and dislike Windows 10, so the learning curve is steep and this keyboard even feels weird.

So now old computer is really acting up, so good thing I did all this. I am still at Zion and am going to drive into St. George tomorrow where there is a Best Buy to see what they have in stock. Otherwise I will order from Dell. IN meantime, just struggling, but at least back is 80% healed.

Even when I get a new computer, it will take me hours to get it set up the way I like and to delete or disable all the "bloatware" or programs Windows thinks I ought to have online--like a direct link to eBay---NOT! Guess I will survive, however. Will never be lazy again and leave laptop out of its case when I travel.

I like my Windows 7 and will never upgrade it to 10

Used to love Apple, as the eleven Apple products in my house will attest to. But I got locked out of the cloud and Itunes a few years ago (long story involving hacked email and even apple engineers not being able to help me), then the latest update fiasco bricked my iphone.. so I'm done. Android phone and a chromebook now, all works well and I'm happy enough with them.

My son suggested a Mac also, but I really need a PC because of compatibility issues with work. I download students' papers, make comments and edits, and then upload them back to the college. I have enough trouble with just the various versions of Word and really get into trouble when students try to upload files from their Macs. I know they are supposed to be compatible, but often they aren't.

And although I am finding fewer issues with Windows 10 that I upgraded to from 8 on this cheapo computer, I agree that I will never upgrade to Windows 10. Luckily Dell still sells a lot of computers with 7--wonder why???

I remember when i first bought this spare computer for a whopping $317 couple of years ago when my hard drive died on my regular computer and I was desperate for an emergency computer, I spent quite a bit of time on the phone to Microsoft and Dell yelling at them. (Reminds me of Verizon, but that is another story.) The thing that really set me off one day was when I called to find out how to turn the darn thing off and the guy on the phone suggested I could take a tutorial to learn how to do that!! I said it was ridiculous to take a tutorial for that, and did he take a tutorial to learn how to turn off his car or his TV????

I think if I order Windows 7 Pro instead of the home version, a lot of that junk will be missing. It was so nice at Ford when they just put the basics on our computers and we did not get all the ads and junk that Dell wants to add. And actually four years ago when I bought my now-dying computer from them, I told them if they put ads on it I would send it back to them and yell over the phone about it, and they did not.

Judy, I've gotten to really like Windows 10. At this point, even though it still requires remembering and thinking on somethings, I have a feeling it might be their best system.

I agree with Beth -- W 10 is my favorite version since XP! I think it's going to turn out to be a real workhorse system, one that remains useful for a long time. Well, long in computer versions of time, anyway.

That said, I really resent Microsoft's efforts to lock all end-users into their 'universe', so to speak. They're getting very clever about it, and it makes me angry.

Now I don't know what to do. I've been getting pop-ups telling me to upgrade from Windows 7 to 10. I've been worried it might be a bad decision so have been dragging my feet. When I read Judy's comments I thought, "Good thing I didn't update." Then I read further and Beth likes 10. Now I'm back trying to decide if it's a good idea or not. Thanks ladies!!

I like Windows 10. Like Beth said there is a bit of a learning curve but it's better than Windows 7.

Sandi, be sure to check and make sure your hardware will be compatible with Win 10. Not all are. In addition it can break some of your applications that won't work with 10 but will with 7.0 up to 8.1. If I were buying new today, I would suck it up and get a Mac. Learning 10 is a PITA to me.

sell if it did at all!!! on the market I think 2 days ...so we had to move into the 5th wheel in the local KOA we thought till he retired then we were off
to Iowa for the summer...so moved the desk top into the trailer onto the desk didn't take long to go looking my son in law at the time was majoring
in something to do with computers so he took me the shop he frequented they had just built a lap top with Vista on it so bought it ...that was in 2007 still use
it daily so slow...but still does what I need it to but really considering getting a new one some time this summer...I so can't complain about this one
it's lasted longer than I understand computers are suppose to...I know I can't afford a Mac though so will be trying to figure out what I need...that and I
so don't use the computer to it's full potential

I am liking 10 a little better, or at least it is not driving me crazy and preventing me from doing stuff like 8 was, but I still ordered my new laptop with Windows 7 Professional on the theory that it works fine for me right now. The thing is that i can always upgrade for free, and the point about hardware being compatible is a good one. A few years ago I had to buy a new printer/scanner because my old one was no longer compatible.

Also, there is a sort of Skype for groups program that the college uses. I had to buy new headphones recently when I had to stop using IE and switch to Google Chrome as a browser for this program because my two-year old headphones were no longer compatible with Chrome!!

Frankly, they make you update software and then you have to update the hardware to go along with it. Talk about a racket!
