I didn't think that they would be able to survive the sub-zero winter temps in SD or even the temps we are experiencing now. But from doing some research on Google, it's possible for alligators to hibernate in cold temps. Wagner Lake isn't a lake by any means but rather a large pond in a city park that was a WPA project. It is aeriated and the maximum depth is about 8 feet. All I can say is at sometime a jerk must have dumped them and never considered that that park is often crawling with kids when the weather is nice. Luckily it was an adult who discovered them.
