Smokey the Bear

Yep, we visited the Smokey the Bear Historical Site. I think Sparkle just did it for me - but we were driving past anyway- and I grew up with Smokey. So of course I had to go take a picture of his gravesite:

I learned a lot from Smokey and his commercials as I was growing up - While at this site, I got to see a picture of him when the firefighter found him holding onto the burned tree as just a little tiny guy. Ah, yes, I get tears about almost any animal.

Oh, thank you. I too remember so many lessons from Smoky.

She should have sat in on the short movie instead of coming in on the end. It was interesting. Showed the real Smokey when he was rescued, and playing with the kids in the rescuers family. Was adorable. And, yep, Cedar, there was a real Smokey - even though the advertising campaign started before him by a couple years. When a firefighter saved this little baby bear (only a couple weeks old) during a fire - a real Smokey was born.

Smokey, the Bear.....
Smokey, the Bear...
Huffing and Puffing and Sniffing the Air....
He can spot a fire before it starts to flame....
That's why they call him, Smokey,
And that's how he got his name.....

Oh, I so loved Smokey, as a kid.....and I hope I got his Theme Song right..... ;)

Sounds like a very interesting spot to me. I would have watched the movie, usually movies at any of the sights are always very informative.

I thought everyone loved, Smokey the Bear!!!! When I was younger and VERY sensitive, I would have cried, if someone said they didn't like him.
He was a real big deal when I was growning up, maybe why I never started any fires, even though, I liked to see fires

Where is it????

Liz and Carol - it's in Capitan, NM - right down the street from Lincoln (pictures not posted yet) and only a hop skip and a jump from the Petroglyph site and from Ruidoso. Lots in the area! That day we were sightseeing by taking some of the scenic drives.

Thanks Beth, I had looked at my map and found the interesting corner of N.M. you all had been in. On my list of places to go. Think a person could spend a great deal of time there.

It's not that I don't LIKE Smokey the Bear, its just that I never grew up with him and thus never got indoctrinated...
It would be like you guys going to a Haggis Museum. Ho-Hum.
