After the Storm Wednesday

Good Morning,

Winter storm Kayla has moved on after dumping about 5-6 inches of wet snow here. No big deal for us, but being mixed with sleet, rain and some freezing drizzle, combined to make driving miserable. All schools are closed and so is our county bus transit, which is very rare. I have decided to cancel my chiropractor appt. and reschedule it. Just routine preventive maintenance anyway.

So instead, I will clear up the drive, deck etc. and wait for road plow to clear road, so I can get over and do neighbor's. It's easier to walk blower over on a clear road. Nice thing is, I don't have other neighbor's to do, now that their friends are staying at house for month of February After that won't bother anymore. Was just doing it as a favor so friends could get in.

Miss Piper is having a puppy spurt this morning. Dragging out anything she can drag. Not destructive, just playing. Now happily chewing a bone which is really her favorite thing. Tina, I saw your post about crate, but in this case, I think there has been too much crate for this pup. The breeder has no kennel at the moment, so while she and her husband are at work or gone etc. , her dogs are in their crates. So this pup is exploring everything she can and trying everything she can But she like Molly has no interest in shoes,cords etc., nor does tearing things up seem to appeal to her. She's adjusting to our daily walks and did real well along the highway yesterday. Vehicles do intimidate some, but eventually she will adjust. She's made herself at home here in the 3 days since she arrived and she and Molly have their play times. We are all going to the vet on Friday for rabies shots and discuss spaying Piper. She finally zonked out here.

Barb, don't know what happened with my posts yesterday. I did make a couple of edits, but that shouldn't make multiple posts Glad your knee is feeling better. I kind of thought from your description, that maybe your knee cap may have slipped out. Chiropractor can adjust that in a few seconds. Sometimes discs or spinal misalignments can cause knee issues big time as I have learned. Sarah, hope all's well at your house after last nights storms. I see that CA has ended water cutbacks. That's good news.

Good morning!

Got elected to open the shop this morning after the big storm, since i live the closest and have 4WD. So here I am with nothing to do. Shop closed early yesterday. We ended up with about 8 inches of snow here, with a lot more south of here. I had a huge drift in front of my garage which i had to plow thru with my jeep. Still snowing a little and blowing a lot. First time it has really looked and felt like winter, all season.

Am on a split shift so will have the afternoon off.

Good morning! Sue, you got the snow, we are having the rain! It is really coming down out there. I'm glad it isn't snow! Sounds like you'll have a busy day cleaning up after it! Temps supposed to get up in the 50's today and then drop tomorrow. Rascal went out in it but Doodles stuck his nose out the doggie door and backed up and went and laid down on his mat! He'll eventually go out when he really has to go! Silly dog!

I stopped at Home Depot yesterday when I was out and got a garage door opener kit. Son said he could install it but that'll depend on his schedule. May be easier to hire someone to do it for me. We'll see!

I may be going to breakfast this morning with SIL, she'll call when she's up and around to let me know if she feels like going or not. I'm not even dressed yet, just nursing my second cup of coffee! If she doesn't want to go I will clean house instead! I'd rather go to breakfast! So not much going on here, same ol' same ol'! Today I'll finish loading up Betsy for the trip to visit Birdie. I leave tomorrow, and I'm very excited about seeing her.

Well, we survived the blizzard. We lucked out and only received about 6” snow. As I write the driveway is being cleaned off. Talked to my sister who lives about 50 miles east of us and they have around 17” and the yard is full of 7 foot drifts. During the day yesterday my friend Missy’s stepdaughter had posted on Facebook that her 13 year old blind Shih Tzu had gone outside on Monday night with her Border Collie just before bed and Jeter never returned. Ann and Kevin spent most of Monday night and yesterday morning looking for him. They were just sick. They had pretty much given up hope of finding him by early afternoon yesterday. My son, Sean, went out to start his car to warm it up before he left for work yesterday about 5:00 and Jeter was huddled by the garage door. Sean bought Ann’s house in August and Jeter had found his way “home” in a blizzard. Jeter had traveled over 2 miles. He was shivering and snow packed. Sean got him in the house and dried him off and called Ann. So there was a happy ending that none of us were really expecting.

Other than weather nothing is new around here. Sue, Piper is just beautiful. I keep watching for a Boston on the rescue sites. I also consider other small breeds. So many have come from abusive backgrounds and aren’t suggested for families with small children and because of Bronc being here so much I have to pass. Also many of the rescue organizations require a fenced yard which we don’t have….it’s a little hard and expensive to fence a half a block.

Suppose I’d better try to accomplish something. Didn’t do a thing yesterday because I get antsy and can’t concentrate during storms. Certainly wish I was one of those people who can go into a cleaning frenzy during storms!

Pat, I don't know if it would help but I know that when I placed Izzy, I wasn't over concerned that Lyn and Bill didn't have a fenced yard. What I did know is that they had two older dogs that they had managed to keep safe and alive on their property for years and had owned multiple dogs with long healthy lives. I figured that they would do what was necessary to keep Izzy safe. Eventually they did go ahead and fence parts of their property.....it did keep Izzy from running over and jumping in the pond , but a fenced yard is only one part of what someone should look for in finding a good home for dogs....and not necessarily the most important.

Unfortunately some of the rescues don't think like that. Our Munchkin lived to 7+ years old and she died because of a brain tumor. Both Tinker and Radar were both just about 14 years old. None of them had fenced in yards. Our only "runner" was Tinker and that was only when she and the neighbor's dog would follow our kids to the swimming pool in the summer. (kids were told to made sure that both dogs were in the houses when they took off...you know how well kids listen) Skye would jump in the pool and Tink would run around the perimeter and bark at her and then go to the concession stand to get a treat from the attendant. The lifeguards would call us and tell us they couldn't let them in to swim on the family passes!

Good Morning All, Our biggest news was about all the trees knocked down by the wind. Two people were killed by falling trees and the golf tournament was closed and all on the golf course evacuated off. One tree across the street from us got knocked down. No damage tho. The usual auto accidents when it rains.

Lots of news on here. Sue, Piper is a beauty!!! Donna, so sorry to hear about the stress from your Dad. But, you did sell that house!!! That was good news.

I'm lovin all the pictures from Liz...thank you! I loved Organ Pipe.

We had company for a couple days...my great niece from Oklahoma here. Never been to San Diego before....was quite impressed.

Barbie, I can sympathize with sore knees. Every step I take is painful now. Will not get the knee replacement until April 1st!

Sunny day today, so, back to pool exercises. Knees do not hurt in pool!

Pat, I've fought many shelters when they have that requirement. It's understandable for some dogs but having responsible owners often doesn't mean they have fences. None of those shelters would let an rver get a dog. Stupid.

We are hitting near record lows for temps this week. Just finished our 2nd night of hard freezes, one more to go then they are predicting this over with for the season. Hope so! But, luckily, those haven't been everyday. Just these came with neutral winds. A tree came down on the back carrier of another workampers RV here. Missed doing great damage to get bus by inches. She was very lucky, more so because she was in the back end of the RV when it happened.

It's another part sunny, part cloudy, maybe a quick shower or two day. Snow pack in the Sierras is better than in several years but we won't know end result until end of snow season and the final measure. What is 130% snow pack now can quickly reverse if we don't get much more snow as its still supposed to be accumulating. We shall see. Have not had as much rain in the valley as I had hoped, though more than past few years. California is talking about easing some water restrictions, but no where near removing restrictions as its pretty much accepted we need to prepare better for droughts in future. And our ground water which supplies wells for both domestic and agriculture use is still way down. So no Sue, CA has not dropped restrictions. I guess green lawns are no longer the hallmark of a California yard from this point forward. And the state has lost millions of trees in forests and yards to the drought. Whether my hubby likes it or not we are going to lose our beautiful redwood from drought damage.
Glad to see Mollie and Piper are enjoying each others company. And Barbara, glad your knee is getting a break. Glad also everyone seems to have done ok during storms. Wind and trees do not go well together.

It rained most of yesterday off and on and into the night. Our rain gauge only had an inch and a half but it sure seemed like more than that. Last night there were a couple of lightening strikes close that made everyone nervous. I don't know where they hit. We had wind too but if it did any damage I haven't seen it. Looks like we will have a week of cooler weather. Much better than all the snow.

I went with my son to bring his dog to the vet yesterday. There was a family in there with an 8 week old Labra Doodle or how ever it is spelled. So cute. I hate to think of a puppy here with all the junk it could get into. I think of Boston Terriers as the perfect little boy's dog but not a small child. My son was 8 when we got Butch. That was Mat's best friend until he left home. Pat, glad your friends found their dog. They were lucky he survived the night.

I think a lot of the rescue places get carried away with the rules and cost to adopt. Years ago I fenced a small area of our back yard so I could let the dog out without a leash. It was just a cheap roll of wire I bought at the hardware store. Not the fanciest fence but we live in the country.

Barbie, I don't know why they thought they had to open the shop if it took 4WD to get there. I hated to go to work if it was raining. I would never have made it in the snow.

I decided to cook country pork ribs in a gravy for lunch. Last night I made hamburgers. That's twice I cooked this week so I should be off the rest of the week. We are doing better at cleaning out the freezer. My son is good at throwing things away. A little too good.

Pat you might want to check with any local breeders. I got my dog from a breeder. She came from Finland for their breeding stock. They showed her for 2 years, bred her twice (That is all they breed their dogs) then spayed her so I was lucky to get her as a dog who just turned 7 when I picked her up. I was hesitant about getting the older dog but she stole my heart and has been the perfect dog for me. They were sad to see her go but I was recommended by Laura who bought her dog as a pup from them (who just happened to be my dogs son) so she vouched for me. I paid them about the same sum I would have a rescue shelter and she grew up in their house along with about 14 other dogs so she was well socialized. Just a thought.

I agree on the rules for rescues nowadays. Between their rules for fencing, copies of bylaws (if you live in a condo or townhouse), proof of training, the price!, etc etc etc, they make it impossible to adopt now. I've even told a couple of rescues they are eliminating a lot of good adoptees because of their rules, which in turn is forcing people to go back to the pet store / puppy mill route, which is what everyone wants to eliminate.

Karen beat me to the suggestion, but Pat you should keep an eye on breeder websites too. A guy at work breeds and shows Bostons, and they sometimes post that they are looking for pet homes for older dogs and puppies that may not be quite up to breed standards for showing.

And Nikki~ I'm going to start keeping tracking of your good byes! You're coming up with some good ones (tales up! ladies start your engines!)

Yep, it's morning somewhere! I just happened to have the laptop out.

Dogs and fences - my daughter lives on 20 acres. Their dog was older when they moved there, but he didn't stray to the road. They answered an ad for a dog who needed a home - don't think she was very old. She wouldn't stay home even with shock collar! They finally built her a pen. I feel sorry for her, but they are good with letting her out, etc. Third dog they got as a pup and she stays home. Guess one never know.

Donna, I am one who thinks as long as your dad is making his own decisions, you shouldn't let it burden you. Maybe you should do like Carolb and find free places to stay besides the driveway! Excited your house sold!

Lyn, so glad to see your post - I had been wondering about your surgery date.

I know I have read many things on here since I posted last but can't remember them all. Sue, sweet new family member! Nikki, good to see you on here. Pat, what a story of the dog returning to former home.

Liz and I moved north to Ajo today for the Old Time Fiddle Contest this weekend - plus a quilt show and whatever else. Temps are quite cool. Had AGM batteries installed in the camper today.
