Generator electrical questions

I have a maintenance /generator /electrical question. I keep my rv plugged in. When I come out to do the monthly generator excercise. I unlug it . When I attempt to run things inside the only thing that will work is some of the overhead lights. I have a small fan or a small heater that I want to turn on so that it also helps excercise the generator. Am I doing something wrong ?Why will other things not turn on?I Note if I switch the battery disconnect the lights turn off . So what am I doing wrong.

Nikki... I think she forgot after disconnecting shore power she had to plug it into the generator that's what I have to do on my class C.... she said she knew that but had forgotten and I have forgotten myself a few times...lol

I think you're saying that she had to be running the genny before she plugged in her fan. Or ....she tried to run the fan without the genny running.

If I had a nickle for every time I did the same thing....

I think she has to plug her shore power plug into her genny to get power to her rig when running her genny. I think that was the problem .

Ah. I think I understand. She has to plug the rig into the genny. I've never heard of that before. I have a switch that starts the genny. Shortly after the genny fires up, I have power. So I guess it's hardwired. I learn something new everyday. Thanks.

My old rig was like yours. Still have the switch, but first have to be plugged into the generator plug in this rig.

Whenever I unplug from electrical and store my electric cord, I plug it into that outlet. That way if I need to use my generator, it's ready.
