Do you remember Oleo? or ice boxes

Postby asirimarco » Sun Jul 27, 2008 12:25 pm

JUst went grocery shopping and my husband looked at list and asked, "What the heck is oleo?" Does anyone else remember the "plastic bag" the white oleo came in. It had a little capsule of yellow coloring you squeezed to break then you kneaded the bag until all the white stuff became yellow. Really dating myself here.

I'll date myself along with you. I thought it was a BIG deal that my mother let me do the squeezing. What about milk with cream on top?

I don't ever remember doing that. But I sure remember oleo. And I know it's getting harder and harder to find it in the grocery store. One little slot on the shelf for oleo. But by goodness you can sure the heck find 100 different kinds of freaking spread. Yuck I hate trying to cook with that stuff. Doesn't melt right and I always seem to burn what I'm attempting to cook. Doesn't help that I again have to deal with an electric stove. For whatever reason around here they are great believers of electric stoves. Give me natural gas or propane to cook with any day. Besides how the heck am I suppose to cook, wash or take the chill off if the dang electric goes off? Which it use to all the blessed time when I lived down here before. We lived out in the country and the electric supply wires always caught he** in a storm. First winter down here in 94-95 we were without power for over two weeks.Thank goodness I had tent camping equipment and a kerosene heater. And a 4x4 pickup. ;)

Oh yes remember the oleo when I was a kid. Mom let me do the squeezing. I also collect cream from the top of the milk and kept it in a pint jar until I had enough I could shake and make a small amount of butter. Always thought that was cool to do.

I also remember running to the store to buy 9 cent a loaf bread for my mom. Oh how things have changed when some of the bread now is over 3.00 a loaf. Gosh wonder what we are paying per gallon for bread. (laughing here)

You could also buy six ounce cokes in a glass bottle that where always so good.

Where did all the fun go?

I remember a product called Oleo margarine, but don't remember anything in a
bag that to be squeezed and mixed. But I do remember glass bottles of milk
(delivered) with the cream on top and my mom always pouring it off to save
for herself.

My mom wouldn't use oleo - she was a farm girl, and believed in the real stuff back then. And we lived close to WI which didn't (then) allow the coloring of butter and butter products - so I remember white butter, too. Years later, she switched, but we had all the real things - yep the milk with the cream on top (I hate milk, LOL, that was even worse!) But I would decide milk was a good thing when we had milk shakes or were making our own ice cream, as long as it wasn't vanilla. Yum.

I was right on the cusp of that. Growing up on a farm I vaguely remember watching my Mom skim the cream off the milk, and having to turn the crank so the paddle would turn the cream into butter, but mostly I recall the box of oleo with 4 sticks in it.

my Mom always let me squeeze them too. Especially liked the cream in the winter when it froze and lifted the little cardboard cap up.
What about ice boxes? When the delivery man used the tongs and threw the block of ice over his back. Then on hot days he would give us kids chunks of ice out of the bottom of the truck - now I think ICK. or when you forgot to empty the water pan.... ever chew hot tar from the street? oh - the "good ole days" any one ever play "Uncle Sam, Uncle Sam let me cross your river dam"? when you could play outside until the street lights came on.

I remember the term but guess living on a ranch we must of used the real stuff cause I don''t remember having to squeese the yellow coloring into the oleo. Margarine I do remember ice boxes no but I also don't remember things very poor memory wonder what I'll remember when I get to that age where you remember the good ole days and not the moments before.

The ice box, we had forty pounds of ice delivered every 4 days, and it had a ccord tied around it that the guy lifted it with. We were in the country so guess they didn't use the big tongs out there. Mom had an ice pick she chipped ice with for us to use in iced tea. We were very country back then, so we still had the wood stove in the kitchen and the fireplaces in the house we heated it with. Then mom got to update she got a kerosene stove to cook on. But many times I would see her fire up that old wood stove, seemed the biscuits cooked better there. She always had that iron skillet ready to cook food in.

Still have that ice pick and the iron skillet she used. Truly a memory point.

I have the ice pick too! In fact I keep it in the edge of the window over my sink,.... just as a decoration now. Most people don't know what it is! Whew-eeee,... guess that dates me!

Raised on a farm in north-central PA so had the "real stuff".....3 milk cows, so we made our own butter....Oh, but you all will love this...while up home in June my brother got some "real milk" from some friends' farm....a whole gallon!!! what a treat!!! Of course, his daughter thought we were all nuts ohhhing over it, but it was sooooooo good!!! Oleo/margarine.....Mom used when the cows were "dry" just before they had their calves.........we had a fridge, but my aunt still had the ice box...so experienced that.....now they just do beef cows at the farm.......but, they still do their own maple syrup in the early spring, like we did when we were kids......and at 55 I am still teased about the fact that I burnt the sap/syrup at age 15....guess I'll never live that one down....lol....they still tap the trees with wooden spouts and hang gallon milk jugs tied with bailing twine to the tree to gather the sap.....then it goes to the big pan in the old milk house to be boiled down into syrup......oh, the good old days....and oh yes, the farm garden still gets planted and canning is still down every year.....can you remember your phone number that you had to tell the operator when placing a call....I can....CA5-4820.....had to know that to go to school....lol..
Okay, back to the present....lol...
