Windows 10

Postby BarbaraRose » Fri Sep 11, 2015 10:01 pm

I just got a new laptop that has Windows 8.1 and want to upgrade to Windows 10 but can't seem to find out how to do that. Have any of you done that yet and can tell me how? I went to the Microsoft website to download it but it just keeps sending me in circles and I end up on the same page I started on and nothing happens.

When you figure it out let me know. I got one with 8 on it and my computer guru said they'd be offering 10 as a free upgrade. Sure enough I got a message that I could upgrade to 10 so I tried to download it from the message. It just keeps saying there's a problem with the download. I haven't had a chance to talk to my friend yet about it.

Last week when I started my Windows 7 Home Edition a box came up to upgrade, it also put an icon in the bottom right corner. Run an update and I bet it will show up.

..
I "signed up" (an icon popped up on my task bar and is still there) for the upgrade maybe 5-6 weeks ago. The reply was that I would receive an email notification when 10 was ready to be downloaded to my computer. I'm still waiting.

From what I remember reading, the free downloads are just a reservations for now and they'll be rolling it out to the customers in phases.

Me personally? I've learned to never upgrade immediately to new version # whatever because of bugs and problems. Even at work, on some of our applications we wait until the next big release and then we upgrade to the one just before it because all of the bugs for the previous version have been fixed.

Same here, but I got the notification to download. And it keeps saying it can't.

Seems like you go through a lot of laptops Barbie. Have you ever thought about switching to a Mac? I switched way back when they ended Windows 98 and so glad from all I have heard. It wasn't hard at all to switch.

My desk top upgraded to Windows 10 but Phoenix can't get it to update on hers. Have not tried to upgrade the laptop yet. I had preregistered and then a couple of weeks ago I just got an update message that asked if I was ready to upgrade to 10 and I said yes. Took an hour or 2 to upgrade. So far I like it better than 8.1. I did have one glitch that I found a fix on the web for. The program that sends error messages back to MS hung up causing the screen to flicker. I turned it off and everything ran fine after that. I'm sure MS has fixed it since then.

Phoenix does not like change, so she probably won't upgrade until she has too  She's complained since Window's 98. She had loaded a "shell program" to make 8.1 run more like XP.

I tried switching to a Mac several years ago, bought a few books to help me and I absolutely hated it. That Mac cost a lot of $$$ too so I really did try. It has spent the last 10 years in the closet in "time out". I am not an Apple fan. I have an Android phone, Kindle Fire and an IPAD that I am also not fond of...call me Apple challenged.

I downloaded Windows 10 and haven't had any problems either on my laptop or PC. So far I like it. I downloaded from CNET on my laptop.

I have a backup laptop with the hated Windows 8, so I will be waiting to see how you ladies do with it before I give it a try!

Like Karen, I'm not a fan of Mac's either. Back some years building websites, the Mac's didn't have many of the programs I needed. And I never was able to justify the cost - especially since my computers last a long, long time. I replaced the old laptop I started on the road with in 2006 or 7 and am still using it (even though when I had a problem with it, I bought another because I couldn't afford to be without - and it's still my backup while I use the old one - which I fixed easily enough and shouldn't have gotten so nervous lol). That said, I know many who love their macs and would never go back. Kind of like how I love my Android - so will probably never have an IPhone.

I haven't put 8 on anything yet, but will eventually, I'm sure.

Can't afford a Mac. I buy cheap laptops because that is all I can afford, so they don't last more than a few years.

Talking about Macs vs. Android or Windows-based systems is kind of like talking about politics. It can get pretty contentious. ;)

I was thinking about upgrading also, then I read up on it. They suggested not upgrading until all the bugs are worked out. You have until June (I think it is) 2016 to upgrade free from 8 to 10. So I am waiting.
