Exciting vet visit!

Postby gingerK » Thu Sep 10, 2015 12:06 pm

As promised, here's my story about my vet visit yesterday.

I had to take Shooter, DH's dog in to get his vaccines. For a change everything went well. Last time there he dumped me on the floor of the waiting room but that's ANOTHER story. So after his check up I am waiting in line to pay at the counter and one of the technicians asks me to please move over into another corner of the waiting room with Shooter because....SOMEONE IS BRINGING IN A WOLF!!!!! Yes, we have a wildlife park just down the road from me (about 3/4 of a mile or so) and they have wolves, lions, a tiger and I believe a bear plus other smaller wildlife. They do wildlife education and actually take the wolves to area schools where the give talks about the animals and also allow the kids to touch the wolf! (I don't know if they still allow the hands-on but I know they used to). I think they also do some wildlife rehabilitation too.

The wolf was transported to the vet's office in a large wire and tarp covered trailer. It was shaped like a Quonset hut mostly covered with a tarp to protect the wolf from wind, weather and blown objects. A woman and a man drove the truck and when it was time for the wolf to come inside the woman climbed into the trailer with the wolf  to secure it on a chain. Then they walked it in just as if it were no more than someone's large (very large!) dog. The poor thing seemed to have a problem with it's eye, it looked as if it was raw and irritated. I think they also must have given it something to calm it because it seemed to be a bit confused but walked straight thru uneventfully. I sure would have been interested in seeing how they handled it to get it examined; whether they could look at it or would have to give it a tranquilizer to check out the problem.

So that was my exciting vet visit! Not everyday you go to the vet and get to see a beautiful white wolf!

Wolves are neat and smart animals. There are people who have them as pets (not recommended) but there are many wolf/dog mixes out there. It's neat that your vet handles them and the other wildlife. And neater than you were there when this one was brought in.

"Wolf Haven" in Tenino, WA has rescued wolves (some white) and wolf/dogs that were "pets" that people learned were NOT good pets. Neat place to visit.

Yes a white wolf. It was beautiful (or maybe handsome, I don't know which gender it was) and to be that close to it was amazing. I sure hope they helped whatever was wrong with it.
