Be sure to stop & take breaks on long hauls - lesson learned

Postby cnq50b » Wed Sep 09, 2015 2:55 pm

I guess I was long overdue to learn this lesson.

I was far too eager to push thru on my drive out west. 30 hours drive time in 2 days without stopping except for gas & potty is not a good thing. I now know that.

Ended up with a blood clot that traveled to my lung. So now instead of taking care of Olivia, I have to take some time out to get my thick Midwestern blood thinned down. Dr explained it could have been worse but I still feel so stupid. I knew I was pushing it but ignored that little voice that said to stop. The louder voice kept saying 'Go, you're doing great! '

So a word of advice for those few of us who continue to push, the word is "Don't!"

Going to take this to heart in other areas of my life too. Already told work I won't be resuming working remotely next week. Need to take my time, focus on sweet Olivia, faithful Sadie & myself. Then, when I'm ready I'll resume working.

In this one case I hope I can fix stupid.

Cathrine - So sorry for your hard learned lesson. Heal quickly and thanks for the heads up!! Most of us are retired and really don't need to hurry but we do anyway.

I'm so glad you're ok, and also think this is a needed reminder and lesson for all of us. Thank you for that.

I'm glad you are ok. I had a blood clot in my leg in my 20's so I know I shouldn't be doing some of the long trips I do. I take 2 aspirins if I'm going to be driving a long time. Also if I fly and have to be jammed in a seat for a couple of hours. Now I have to use the bathroom often enough that I probably get enough exercise. On one of our trips home to get my sister back to work I was afraid I had another clot. My leg bothered me for a couple of weeks. This is a good reminder for me.

Whoa! NEVER ever thought about that. Ever.
I guess it's like being on a long-haul airplane ride - get up and walk around every hour.

I'm so glad you're okay. And thanks for giving us all a heads up.

Good warning for the rest of us. We not only need to take breaks, we need to walk around when we do so.

Like Martha, however, I end up stopping at every rest area on interstates to hit the bathroom!

And we need to not only take breaks, we need to get up and walk around. Glad also that you are slowing down your work schedule!

when we lived in Utah and would take the trip back to Iowa my husband would push it...drive long hours cause he was
eager to get back to family! and then he would sleep two days...I travel with a dog so it's easy to make myself stop
although I don't walk as much as I should even with Shadow to walk need to do better with it..
a good reminder...get to feeling better

Wow! Something I never would have thought about. I too somethings drive way too long with minimal walks. Thanks for the warning and glad you're going to be OK. Get better quick so you can be with sweet little Olivia more.
