Judy, I have State Farm as well, I told my agent to make sure there was no sort of claim being filed because I didn't want to end up in that same boat. 38 years with them and multiple lines for all but the last two years (cars, motorcycles, home, etc).

I shopped around when we moved to FL but they were still the cheapest by far... although if they're not going to cover things or jack my rates if I make a claim, might be time to re-think that.

I'm always amazed by those of you who say SF is cheapest - they have always been higher when I've quoted with them ... way higher in most instances. And last time I checked they wouldn't insure a full-time rv. More and more companies are now, but lots still don't, and many don't understand the differences.

I just got off the phone with the insurance company - I decided to take the rate that allows me to keep the car. It's beyond fair. And for those of you wondering, the rate if I gave them the car was only a couple dollars less than I paid for the car 5 years ago and the rate I'm getting is more along the lines I expected the first rate to be. They have been very fair in doing this.

Many think I should have given them the car, but none of this is structural - and I believe, better the enemy I know ... in this case, the POS I know :) ... and if I come back to SD next summer, I won't worry much about the hail ... as far as the car is concerned!

Now, I've been calling places about getting the much more minor damage to the rv fixed. I can't just take it in and leave it ... it is my home. One company is coming out next Tues and will look - they said they might even be able to do it here. That would be awesome. I'll wait until after they come by before I continue calling.

Beth - SF offers huge discounts if you'been with them and been accident free forever, something like 20 years I think.

Glad you decided to keep your car, definitely the devil you know.

I was with State Farm for both car and home for about 40 years, and they quoted me an annual premium of $5,000 for my motorhome!

I ended up going with GMAC, now Good Sam National, for $1,800 per year. Now I pay only $1,200 per year now that my ticket and that "moving violation" was removed.

I had State Farm coverage for over 30 years. Initially only coverage for whatever car I had at the time but, as life went on, added coverage for house, an umbrella policy, etc. I seldom had claims. I was involved in a couple of fender benders but, thankfully, it was the other driver's fault and SF was not out any money. Several years ago I filed a claim for a new roof due to hail damage and was approved. The claims adjuster advised I should either put a new roof on a little shed in my backyard or tear it down since he was considering it a liability (?). This was to be at my expense. I set about trying to find someone to take down the shed and replace it with an enclosed garage. This was when housing was booming and I couldn't get anyone to take the time to come look much less give me an estimate. SF sent me a letter stating they were going to cancel my homeowner policy if I did not comply with the advice to remove the shed by a certain date. I notified my agent of the trouble I was having finding a contractor and that I could not meet their demand. I never heard back from him and SF cancelled the coverage. I changed to All State and they were fine but expensive. I'm now with Liberty Mutual and have been very pleased. The auto premium is a little high but I think that has more to do with the vehicle I have than anything else. Oh, and SF sends me letters periodically telling me what a good customer I was and how could I leave them after 30+ years and begging me to come back. Nope, they kicked me to the curb so I'll not deal with them again.

had State Farm many years ago, when the kids were little, all total we had 9 policies which included our business, buildings and vehicles and of course our own vehicles and house. We never had a claim until one year we had a a flood in the basement
and asked to have the carpet replaced. They came out did the estimate and replaced the carpet. Shortly after that they sent us a letter canceling our homeowners, well, the joke was on them cause husband called and canceled all the policies that covered our business. To this day we have never done any business with State Farm since then, thats about 40 years.

I have The Hartford and need to check around as they advertise giving a good driver discount, then nullify that by raising my premiums. Perhaps when you reach social security age they figure it's not 'if' but 'when' you are going to have an accident.
PS never had a claim with them, no tickets, nothing.

The Hartford, or the Hartford through AARP? - two different things. That said, twice my premiums have gone down and when they've gone up, it's been minimal. This year I think I'm going up all of $4. And I had a claim after my tire blow out and now this summer on both the rv and the car because of the hail. I'm very pleased with them. They called me this week to tell me I could have a rate decrease of over $50 this year if I take the AARP on line safety class - which would mean my rate would decrease - even with two claims this year. I started that dang class a while back - need to find my link and see if it's not too late to complete it.

I think we all have love/hate relationships with insurance - of all kinds.

Yes, The Hartford AARP. And I checked out taking the online test and you have to pay to take it. Really? Sounds like a racket to me.

It's a class. One RV park I wintered at offered it one year, the not on line version, for $5. It's not short, which is why I haven't yet finishedfit, but I've found it worthwhile. I don't find it to be a racket at all. And I'd get the discount taking ANY approved class. Kind of how I felt about taking the motorcycle safety class. But I think that one should be mandatory for anyone riding a motorcycle or scooter on the roads, even, maybe especially, the small ones.

I love Geico for my van. Cheaper than any others that I have checked out. I get a discount for taking safety course whether from AARP class or online.

I don't understand why insurance companies give a discount for a course you pay to take online in which you can easily cheat on the answers. Why can't they go by your (no ticket/accident/claim) driving record?

If you took it, you'd realize you'd to learn it to "cheat". Still a win win for insurance companies.

Is is five o'clock somewhere!? Mitzi has been on a naughty streak all day. I found her on the couch munching happily on a Ricola lemon cough drop this morning  No idea where she would have unearthed that, then I found her with part of a napkin. I gave her a bath this afternoon and just as I got her soaped up, she jumped out of the tub, then tried to get back in as I guess she realized she was in big trouble. She proceeded then to act as though she had never had a bath before and I was going to drown her, and at that point I was about ready to! She was a worm on the grooming table as I tried to dry at least part of her hair and look for hidden mats. After I put her down, while I was cleaning the bathroom floor, she used her piddle pad in the bedroom and missed, so another floor to clean. Thank goodness she has just crashed on the couch for a nap which I hope is a long one.
