Nasty storm!

Postby BarbaraRose » Sat Jul 18, 2015 1:17 am

Spent half an hour downstairs at midnight in the basement hallway of my apartment building with the animals and 20+ other people and their pets waiting out a tornado warning. A tornado was spotted just a few miles west of us moving east.
After the tornado warning lapsed, we all headed back upstairs. But now, an hour later, I am hunkered down in my bathroom listening to hurricane force winds and torrential rains. Worried about the windows blowing in. It is a huge storm system! Lights keep flickering off and on. Power is out across the street but not quite here yet. It is very noisy and scary right now! Haven't been thru anything like this for as long as I can remember!
Should be moved thru here in another hour or so.

Luckily, I went out earlier and moved my kayak up against a concrete wall out of the wind, so hopefully, it will still be there in the morning!

Starting to quiet down a bit now. Maybe the worst is over. Will be a mess around here by morning with damage to trees, etc.

Sounds like a nail biter of a night! People like to talk about hurricanes down here but that once in a blue moon occurrence has nothing on Midwestern summer storms, I spent many a night in the basement wait ing out tornados and straight line winds!

Hope your kayak is right where you left it.

Keeping you in my thoughts and wondering how far north the storm extended because my son lives out of Mora and has no basement.

Just got up to assess the damage. There was a tornado touchdown just a few miles west of here that did quite a lot of damage. The winds here ripped out one of the skylights in our hallway by my apartment and there are a lot of large tree limbs down in the back yard. The landscape crew is out here this morning looking over the damage to their in-progress landscape project by the lake. Quite a mess! Part of the beach got washed out, but my kayak is still where I put it! Yay!

Going back to bed for a short time here before getting ready for work. I am very tired this morning!

Barbie, I can sympathize with you. Sounds like the Storm I went through in Kennebec, SD where my trailer was rocking and got damaged from flipped picnic table, plus two campers, a pop up and 5er got flipped on their sides. I've never been in a storm with such fury and the locals there said it was way out of character for that area. Winds hit 91 miles an hour. That too seemed like it lasted forever.

I was camped in southern Minnesota that night. It never made it down our way, but we were under a tornado watch and I had my weather radio on, hoping for the best. I'm glad you came out OK. A not so funny story is that in my hurry to set up that night before any rain came, I did the unthinkable and tried to run my slide room out with the lock bar still in. I got it stopped quick, but still popped out the facer board on the slide room. My camper is going back to the dealer for repair and I'll find out what that careless stupidity cost me. I went through a horrible storm in Wall, SD one night several years ago and I can still hear my late hubby saying, "Too bad they don't put basements in these things." He thought that if we had not stayed hitched up that night because we were just passing through that it probably would have rolled over. Lots of trees down and some overturned campers, especially fold downs. It pays to pay attention to the weather, hence I now carry that trusty weather radio.

Luckily, my camper mechanic was able to put the top down before he removed the lift assembly, so no damage done. If it had been up, could have been a lot of damage to it. Hoping to get the new parts on Friday and installed right away and be able to sell it quickly.
