Almost a catastrophe

Fancy, I has a minor melt using a rack on the back of my 22ft class C. I paid to have the exhaust moved before I headed out to Alaska in 2012 because I knew that I wouldn't tow the car and wanted/needed to use the storage of the rack. It was only money. Sure made me feel safer and gave me the storage I needed.

I guess we are lucky. Our household trash is picked up once a week paid for by the parish. Probably out of our taxes but not a fee we have to pay monthly. A couple of times a month a truck comes by to pick up things that won't go in the trash bins.

Sue, checked out your sewer hose carrier and thought that would be a good solution - that is till I went out and looked and discovered I don't have a bumper to attach it to. The plastic storage box on the far end of the shelf away from the exhaust pipe works quite well but it was my intention to have two storage boxes.
BirdbyBird - it has been suggested to me to take the C to a muffler place and have the pipe modified. Have to take the C in for its checkup before I leave on vacation next week and will ask the mechanic about it. Maybe there is a really good reason it is designed like it is and modifying it will cause additional problems.
Camping World sells an extension that moves the shelf out farther from the back of the RV but concerned that if I am sitting at a series of traffic lights, it might still get too hot, and the extension is a little pricey.
Arghhhhh... what to do?
Wish I had MelissaD's understanding these mechanical things.

I stand by my response as well. If you thought the fumes would have dissipated in "about an hour" you might have hung around until then, even though it would be a big inconvenience to you. Or gone to get a few big garbage bags to put it in and then disposed of it properly. Your mess, your problem. Instead of taking responsibility, you made your problem become another person's problem.

I suspect that at the time, you thought you were doing something that wasn't too bad, but perhaps the next time you will find a better solution.

Oh my Judi. I can only hope there won't be another time for that one. Once was quite enough.

I hope you don't experience that situation again as well. I never thought about the heat generated by vehicles, but now I will!

About 25 years ago, I worked in an office building in a beautifully wooded area. The builders had left trees surrounding the parking lots, and it was all very lovely.

Well, one morning a car had parked over a pile of leaves and the catalytic converter caught the leaves and the car on fire. It made for a pretty exciting couple of hours as the fire department tried to keep the very impressive fire from spreading to other cars parked nearby. No one was allowed to move their vehicles, so several people who were parked close were very worried.

We all need to be careful never to park in fields where the grass is high or on piles of dead vegetation.
