Late night vet visit

Postby Redetotry » Sun Jul 05, 2015 7:50 am

We made a late night visit to the emergency vet with Toby last night. As we were getting ready for bed he ate something he found on the floor. As soon as he swallowed it he suddenly started like he had swallowed something he couldn't get down and kept gulping trying to get it out. I gave him yogurt, a crust of bread with butter on it hoping it would push what ever appeared to be stuck didn't help he went outside and ate grass..a lot of grass and of course threw up inside. He still kept gulping and getting more distressed so I called a local emergency vet as ours is 25 minutes away. Their emergency service is for their clients only but a vet agreed to see him. On the way there his stomach became very distended and I was terrified he was bloating although his symptoms hadn't been anything like when Charley bloated, 3 times...They did X-rays and asked if he ate socks or any other items of clothing as he had a large amount of stomach content. I said no, but forgot until this AM that he does eat sticks. They had sedated him for the X-Rays and said they wanted to scope him to see if they could tell what was in his stomach and it would take another hour at least to tell and that if it was something they felt he could throw up, if so,they would to bring him out of sedation to do that. We decided we should leave him there for the night as it was after one by that time.
I slept very little and I'm waiting anxiously for their call. I think if they would have needed to do surgery they would have called during the night. I can't believe I forgot to tell the vet he eats sticks. The house feels so empty with one of our little ones missing.

I hope you get good news soon!

Dogs eat the weirdest things. I once saw an x-ray of a dog's stomach containing a choke chain. I can't imagine how that happened. (They saved the dog's life, too.)

Thank you all for your concern! He is home, a bit dazed from drugs but the gulping has stopped. Thank goodness it wasn't sticks in his stomach but grass, per the endoscopy. Since the medicine they gave him to make him throw up didn't work, they did another X Ray before they discharged him and said the mass of grass 'appears' to be moving through his stomach and intestines. Still no answer as to what triggered the initial gulping attack. The cost was shocking but when it's that time of night you are sort of at the mercy of who is available. I'm sure my vet would have been half the price but they don't have all the newer equipment and are quite a distance farther. DH said having a Poodle is like having a Mercedes, the maintenance is higher. I will call his regular vet tomorrow and see what he thinks and if he thinks he should see him.
