Today was a challenge. The drive to work everyday is long . . . an hour. I was about three miles from work when there was a loud bang like a gun shot on the rear passenger door. I was driving past an empty lot in a neighborhood close to downtown and thought something hit the side of the car or someone shot the car as I passed the lot so I sped up to get out of the area. Very quickly there was another loud bang, this time in the passenger seat. There was smoke and I thought a firecracker had been thrown into the car. It felt like I had been hit in the chest below my right shoulder, but couldn't figure out what hit me. About half a mile later, there was an explosion and smoke, and I realized both airbags were deploying while I was driving. It was incredible, but I managed to not hit anything and pulled the car off the road.
The got the dealer to the dealer, who immediately assumed I hit something. Didn't happen, plus I was driving no more than 25 mph when this started. Engineers from the manufacturer are coming in to investigate what happened. The dealer gave me a free rental car until they figure out what happened.
It took me all day to calm down. I was so lucky this happened on a side street at low speed, not while I was driving 70 mph on the Turnpike. Now, I have to wait and see what the investigation turns reveals.
