Does your dog read your mind?

Postby Redetotry » Thu Jun 11, 2015 9:27 am

Toby reads my mind, I've had Poodles do this before but he is really good at it. I had remote start on my Subaru so had one installed in my new Sienna. When I would touch or start to touch my key (which is on my purse in the kitchen) to start the Subaru, Toby would start barking, even if he was in another room. So when I got it for the Sienna I thought he wouldn't get it the first time I tried, wrong... as I reached for my key he started barking from the living room. He even does it if I take the other key that I keep in a drawer in the kitchen. He never barks when I am not going to use the remote start and I get the key for any other reason. Today, I was going to move Elsie and I thought he would bark when I went for the key that is in the same drawer as the extra key to the Sienna but not a peep from him. So how does he know unless he is reading my mind? I can't think of any clue I might be giving.
Charley, used to do similar things, like one time I decided to go for a walk at an odd time of day. I was in the kitchen at the table, before I got up, he went to sit in front of the closet door where I kept my walking shoes.

Anyone else have experiences like these.. with their dog or a person?

Our cat Stormy, back when Mel was still working, would get up and begin pacing and meowing when he was still out of sight on his way home. She always knew when he was close to home, even if he was coming at an unusual time which I was not aware of such as early. There were times when I would wonder why she was up making a fuss because it was early, then a few minutes later I would see him turn the corner down the block for home. I said she was psychic. LOL

sometimes it's just reading your body language because they pay really close attention to us. other times it's that they can hear better than we can. but sometimes it is just no other explanation than that they "know". they also see things we don't/can't. I witnessed this firsthand with DH's dog right after my Mom passed. I truly believe he saw her spirit.

My 16-year-old cockapoo, Krissi, can tell what I'm going to do by my actions and the clothes I wear. I took early retirement, so for the last almost 13 years, Krissi has watched my every move and action. She's smart enough to remember all these things and put them together to figure out what I did last time in the same way and determines I'll do the same thing again as she sees me do those same things again. I think she's way smarter than I am.

Some years ago I saw a TV program about this phenomena. The bottom line is, no one can explain it, but it is true.

My cat can be sound asleep in the back bed room, if I lay on the couch in the living room, soon she will appear and jump up to cuddle!

When I stayed with the kids, I always knew when the SIL was on his way home because his cat would suddenly come down stairs and sit by the back door.

My dog just hangs in the room with me and is ready for a walk whenever!

When I get out my snowshoes in the winter, my dog gets very excited because she knows she is going with me. If I get out my skis she sulks and sits in front of the door so I can't open it. When I was horribly upset after my son passed away, she would not leave my side, and pressed herself against my back when I was sitting on a bench. When ever I cry she comes to me, even in the middle of the night. I love her.

You know what, judi? I love her too, for giving you such comfort. They are so wonderful, aren't they?

Oh yes, they are so smart. Bandit always got excited when I would get ready to go out somewhere. If I had to go somewhere that didn't include him I had to put a uniform shirt on over my shirt just to get out the door. Then he would calm down and go back to bed. Soon as I got in the car the shirt came off and I did what I needed to do.

I am usually bare foot in the house so a couple of the house cats know if I put on shoes I am going outside. I pick up my shoes and wait until I get on the porch to put them on if I don't want the cats going outside. I can't let them see me pick up the shoes either.

I never figured out how one cat I had would know I was on my way home. About 10 minutes before I arrived, didn't matter if I was walking or driving or in someone else's car, that cat would go sit and stare at the door. I got confirmation when we stayed with my Mom for a couple months.

Moxie, one of the dogs who started my rving adventure with me had separation anxiety for years. My ex and I owned a small motel. Or home was next to it. The day we moved there, she never got upset when I'd go out to the motel. But if I was putting the same shoes and jacket on for any other reason, she went nuts. She also was totally in tune with my feelings.

Peaches recognizes lots of cues I've never taught her, but so far, all understandable.

Animals have an internal clock. It might be off a bit one way or the other but they always know when it is about time to eat, go for a regular walk, when you are due home from work, etc.

I was never coming home at the same time. And I'm not taking by minutes, but by hours.

I really do believe they know things like when we're coming home or going to give them a bath but with the remote it emits a radio signal to your car and its possible with their hearing they can actually hear the signal that we can't.

Beth, if you were driving, dogs recognize the sound of your car and can hear you coming blocks away.
