Livingston to West Yellowstone

Postby Colliemom » Sat Jun 06, 2015 7:17 am

Need some suggestions from those of you who have been to Yellowstone from north. I'm currently in Livingston, MT on 89 which is the Gardiner entrance to Yellowstone, Actually have two ways to go from here to get to West Yellowstone. Can either go down 89 and enter park at Gardiner or got west to Bozeman and take 191 down. I've read that 191 is a curvy narrow road in some places. Good Sam routing is advising to go that way.

Any of you who have been to Yellowstone been on either of those roads? Am wondering which one would be better or are they pretty much the same?

I have been both ways. I prefered 191 with the trailer as I did not have to go through the park. 191 is flat, the curves minimal, and the scenery is spectacular. The park roads are much narrower, hilly, curvy, and CROWDED.
Have a great trip.

I agree that 191 is pretty and nice drive.

Thanks for the input you two. I am going to go 191. Took a ride down to Gardiner today as it's only 50 miles down the road and there's 14 miles of road construction. Down in the town, it's all messed up and talking with somebody who was visiting the town from West Yellowstone, she said it's a mess all the way into the park. So I'm not going that way. for sure. Want to make a run to Bozeman's WalMart anyway, before I head to West Yellowstone.

I have been to the 63 Ranch in Livingston. It's right next door to Tom Brokaw's ranch. We drove the winding road to Yellowstone, but in a rental car. Enjoy!

Vonda, I'm at the Rock Canyon RV Park, just two miles south of Livingston on the left side of the road. Have a travel trailer parked down by the river.

This made me think of Chris Farley's funny act where he lives "in a van down by the river."

Did you drive into the park from Gardner? If so, you probably noticed the 45th marker along the road that I photographed and sent to you a long time ago.

Also, don't forget when you get to West Yellowstone to get a huckleberry ice cream cone at the little shop on the corner in downtown! Yum.

I loved that skit and, though I don't actually live in a van, I use that line  Some of the sistahs, actually do ;)

Sue....It's a bummer that I missed you, here in Keystone, and also in West Yellowstone, on my way here. I had breakfast with friends, in West Yellowstone, at Running Bear Pancake House. YUMMY!!!
