Most cabover beds are hard foam. I add a 2" memory foam topper to mine when I have company, but I wonder why you cannot just replace those hard foam mattresses up there with something more comfortable? My cabover area is a little higher than most, so I could sit up easily, so I could imagine sleeping up there myself if I had a softer mattress for it.

I would think you could put something else up there and if it is high enough to sit up, then it could be doable. The only concern I would have is the middle of the night bathroom run!

That's why I bought a bunk ladder! :D

FYI a lot of the truck camper people replace their cab over mattresses with a good memory foam one. Just a word of warning, if you do this be sure you open up the mattress inside the camper! They really expand.

Tip on Memory Foam: For my guests I have a 2" memory foam topper for my cab-over bunk I store in one of my underneath bins. These really do puff up amazingly, so take a lot more storage room opened than closed. When my guests leave, I fold it up as best I can and put it in a plastic bag. Then I go through a bunch of gyrations, including laying on it and sitting on it to squeeze it into a smaller packet. As I am doing this, I use a roll of duct tape to wrap around it--several times around the middle as it gets smaller and smaller, and several times around the other way.

I can't get it back to the same size package it came in when it was new, but it comes pretty close. Lots of duct tape ensures it does not expand and damage a storage area.

Ok, Judy, here's what I do with my memory foam topper: we roll it up as tightly as we can get it and use some cinch straps (think I found them at Walmart, they are straps with a buckle that snaps together and can be cinched tighter after we get them around the roll). Then I store the rolled up mattress in a huge zippered duffle bag that my DH originally bought for his hunting trips (but I found and co-opted for my own use!) The whole thing I just store on my cab over bunk when not in use. The bed's big enough that even if I'm sleeping there I still have room for the rolled up mattress in its bag.

so this is sorta on the subject ....it seems like a year or two ago someone got a 3 inch or bigger foam from
some company to use as a mattress wonder how it worked did you put a memory foam on top or ?????????????
I was given a sleep number bed but it's bigger than the platform that my mattress was on...so in the back of my
mind wondering if I should do something with it and get me something different

Sheila I think you might mean Sue (Colliemom). I know she replaced some cushions and got some foam for her bed in her tt. I'm sure she'd be happy to tell you what she thinks of it next time she's on here. I have a link for where she bought the foam if you'd like to look I can post it.

It has been interesting to read all the comments - I was dead set on the bed in the back, but after reading everything I am going to broaden my search to RV w/o the bed. If I find one with the bed, great! But if not, I think I can handle the over the cab bed. This will give me a better chance of finding something by the time I am done with work in Aug. or Sept. as I already have several trips planned, and I need to get moving!!
