Bike racks

Bike racks

Postby JRKERMIT » Mon May 11, 2015 3:56 pm

Any recommendations for bike racks ? I tried the bike rack we have today in the hitch on the rv it will not fit. Does not go all the way through so cotter pin can attach and keep it in. So now I am on the hunt for one that will hold 4 bikes. Need it before we leave on the 22nd.

The one I had only held two bikes. No clue where it came from but it was attached to my bumper, not my hitch. But this website sells lots of types, bumper and hitch types:

Mine came from Harbor Freight (I think), it fits in the hitch but is a bit wobbly. We only used it on the tc to carry lawn chairs because we had no roof ladder and space was at a premium. When secured with ratchet straps, nothing moved. And the plus was that if we undid the straps we could lay it down for access to the camper (my door is at the rear) without removing it from the hitch.

I found an extention for the hitch that fits and the bike rack fits in it. I will need some straps to keep it a bit more secure. I am a little leary of how far it sits out from the rv but I guess that is OK that way I know it will not scratch it up.. How far should it sit out

I use lots of bunge cords to hold my bike secure on my bike rack.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

My guess is that it should clear your bumper so that you don't scratch either the bikes or the bumper. Being as you said it's for 4 bikes, I'd say pretty far out. Some of them I've seen on cars do seem to stick way out in back and they look like they are the ones that carry more bikes. How far out does yours sit Jane?
