Flat towing

I was just wanting to get some opinions on flat towing cars. We are not towing just yet but may purchase something if we find a good deal.
So what are advantages and disadvantages to flat towing. What cars do you flat tow. Any helpful hints about towing also appreciated

Several of us flat tow a Honda Fit. Honda CRV can be towed, and Chevy HHR. There are others but you have to check the towing guide for the particular model and year. The advantage to me is easy hook-up and not having to mess with a trailer or tow dolly.

Motor Home Magazine publishes a guide each year. I think you can find them online for the year and make of car you are considering. I have not looked because we have several years worth which they send each year with our subscription.

I, personally, wouldn't want to deal with the extra tow dolly. Towing flat is so much easier - and some sites it's not always easy to find a place to stow that extra dolly. One lady from the forum started out with a two dolly and by a year later had changed cars and gone to flat towing. She never said why, other than they didn't like the dolly route. A good friend of mine has a dolly, doesn't like it, but loves her car, which she got a very good deal on and is still in excellent shape. She makes sure she always has pull through sites for 1 or 2 night stays where she doesn't want to unhook - that and needing the extra space if she does unhook, means she can't comfortably stay some other places. She's accepted these things - and went out and added a hitch to the back of the car to be able to move the dolly around - but some day acknowledges she'll be flat towing also.

The thanks on the offer on the magazine when we get ready to but I will let you know. Right now I am thinking something with a manual transmission. From what I have researched they are better for flat towing. Also might be something fun like a convertible etc. Since it will not be our primary car not wanting to pay a lot for it .

Do not let people fool you. There are manual transmissions that are not recommended for flat towing, also. Look in the owners manuals to be sure.

I was talking to the RV shop where I go about towing and he said that the 2015 Hondas can't be flat towed. The only reason I bought a 2013 Honda CR-V was so that I could tow it if I wanted to. When I was looking for a new car I was considering a Ford Escape. The manual said it could be flat towed but when I searched on the internet people were having problems towing the newer models. I also looked at the small Chevrolet SUV but it was almost 1,000 pounds heaver than the CR-V.
