Article on Traveling Solo

Interesting article on reasons for traveling solo: http://www.bbc.com/travel/feature/20150 ... ic-country

I've traveled solo in England and Scotland and loved almost every minute of it. People are almost always kind and helpful, especially when you are a woman traveling solo. Her story about having a chef fix her a special meal reminds me of the time I was the only guest at a very small hotel and woke in the morning to find one table set for one person in the dining room! Made me feel guilty that someone had got up just to fix breakfast for me. (The owners lived in the 7-room hotel.)

I am reminded of the lady in an RV park in Idaho a year or so ago. When she found out I was traveling alone, instead of the usual "All by yourself!?!?" she said "you are SO lucky!"

Seems like she and her husband were on a three-month trip she had allowed him to plan in their brand-new RV. Big mistake #1. She said the last month had been the worst in 37 years of marriage!!! I chuckle about it all the time.

I really think the enforced togetherness of living in a small space shows the truth of a marriage and staying together must be quite a task. MUCH easier to go it alone ;)

Totally agree. And the longer I'm alone, the less I would be any good as a traveling companion, no matter how much I loved the person.

I, too, prefer to travel alone. I like to move slowly and examine everything completely. Most people are driven nuts by that. I haven't found any particular difficulties, though the 'single surcharge' in some circumstances can drive the price up. People seem to go out of their way to be kind.

It was a neat article!

I feel like I'm going against the grain here. My then husband and I were full-time RVers for 13 years, got along great and had a blast on the road. When we finally came off the road was when things fell apart. Guess that's why I'm still in fence-sitting mode when it comes to moving back into an RV. Had a wickedly fun time with another person along, but just not sure if being in my own company going down the road would be a good thing or not.
Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.
