City Parks

Postby Ackcminnie » Sat Jan 10, 2015 5:09 pm

Hi All,
I just ordered my Mountain Directories, got both of them, East and West. (Makes me feel like I am going somewhere!)
So now I am doing the research for summer travelling and keeping up with the GTG. plans in Michigan. If that works out for us, it will be great to meet all the great gals here! Have to see what DH thinks of that. It's hard to keep him out of Arizona and Utah. He fell in love with that area. Who wouldn't?

I am wondering and trying to do my homework to find out how you find the little "city parks" that many towns have. When we went out West last year, we found the one in Little Rock, Arkansas and the one in Neligh, Nebraska quite by mistake!! They were great, so inexpensive and being close to towns was a real plus since we do not tow.

I have the "Gypsy Journal's Guide to Free Campgrounds and Overnight Parking Spots". It has a lot of good places listed. Other than that, does anyone know of any other directories listing the City Parks? How do you find them on your own? From what I read on this blog, some of you are really good at it!!

Thanks everyone, stay warm, stay safe and prayers to all that are in need.

Check out the Ultimate Campground Project. I think there is a website and an iPad/iPhone app. I have the app and it's pretty cool.

I use mainly the free campground websites. Mainly the .net one, Oh Ranger -an app for Android, and the AllStays app.

I added them in too!

Thanks, ladies! This is why I love this forum so much. SO much good information that I would not likely find anywhere else.

Hoping to get back on the road this year - Yellowstone, here I come! :-)

I LOVE city parks and stay at them whenever I can. I've found many on the www.rvparkreviews site as well. If all else fails I actually call the chamber of commerce, the city parks and rec dept and once even the local library and ask about a city park. Found a few this way. I much prefer them since they are usually much quieter and uncrowded.

You can also try a Google Map Search on your computer or on a cell phone. On the maps page, type in "campgrounds near ????" and enter in the name of the town. It will show you everyplace, and a bit more--a lot of errors in that it might showing camping stores and mobile home parks. Not a perfect tool, but you can scroll in or out to look at a larger area.

I use Classic Google maps, by the way, because it has a lot more functions and lets you plot out a multi-stop trip. I also start off with the regular map view because it shows campgrounds in green and sometimes you can find city and county parks that way. Then I switch to the view that shows terrains and I can check to see if it is really a campground.

You can also ask us about a part of the country. For example, most California state parks are lousy and expensive, but there are some wonderful, and much nicer campgrounds. For example, Riverside County in California has some great county parks. Ditto for Phoenix, AZ, or Maricopa County.

Don't forget Corps of Engineering parks. Recreation.gov is the site to find these. If you are over 62 and have the federal pass, they are half-price. Most importantly for me, they all have electric and water sites, some even full hookups, and I have never had a bad one in over two years of full-timing!!

thanks again gals for the info on city parks!

Liz - I got the Allstays for rv ap after reading your post!

Karen - rvparkreviews has helped me a lot in the past. I will try to find city parks there too.

Judy - Great advice! I will check into the Classic Google Maps. I did have the COE camping book and found recreation.gov helpful. I do have my senior pass. I learned about that from all of you!

Velda - I ordered the mountain directories from Mountaindirectory. com It was the only place that had them BOTH for $31.90 if you ordered them at the same time. I think Amazon was more expensive.

All of your help is what makes this forum so great! I follow your other blogs too and keep notes on places you all have visited and made comments.( I think women are just much more open to helping other women than men are!) Just my own humble opinion!!
