Negative comments

Postby gypsyrose1126 » Thu Jan 08, 2015 2:50 pm

Just wondering --- When you mentioned to friends or family that you were going to RV, buy an RV, live full time or travel for months at a time, did you all get negative comments? My daughter thinks it is great (course she wants to borrow the RV when I am working) my son doesn't care what I do:>). However I was very surprised by the majority of my friends and my brother -- All I heard was, it is soooooo expensive, cheaper just to drive and get a hotel, they always are breaking down, to dangerous for a woman, to dangerous to travel by yourself, gas costs to much, to lonely ( of course the fact that I have lived by myself for 20 years makes no difference) etc. etc. etc. To be honest I was really shocked by all of this and of course disappointed by the lack of support. I still have not found an RV I want, thinking of going down to FL. this month to see why I can find.

Listen to the positive, ignore the negative, and stick around here for tons of support and advice! Do what makes you happy! Sometimes I think those with negative views are jealous or just uninformed.

Consider the fact they don't have a clue and ignore them.

That is exactly right! They don't understand the reality of the RV lifestyle at all, so don't take anything they say seriously since they don't know what they are talking about. The other possibility is that they are jealous of you being able to do that and they can't/won't, for whatever reason. Just talk about it with those who support you.

You know what you are doing, what you want, and are making an informed decision. It is your life, your money, your time, your dream...go for it!

Go for it!!! Persons with the negative comments have no idea what they are talking about. RVing is safer than living in a sticks and bricks home. I was fulling 16 years and never once had a safety issue! Lyn

My reply to my husband when he told me he could stay in a lot of hotels for what an RV costs was that they don't build hotels where I want to stay. I have a friend that went on a trip with me in my motorhome. She decided that traveling in a motorhome was boring because it took too long. She has been to India, Africa, South America, Dubai and other places I don't remember. She seems to forget all the times she misses connections, tour guides don't show up, the hotels are terrible, the food is bad, etc. I have no interest in flying all over the world with the things that are going on now and I'm sure she has spent more than my motorhome cost. I enjoy the trips in my motorhome, not just the destination. I don't want to be dragging my stuff in and out of motels to go somewhere. I am more afraid to stay in a motel than a campground.

There are things that have to be repaired in an RV but cars break down and houses have repairs too. You just have to decide what you want to do and go for it. If you start traveling and meeting people you will have friends all over the country.

Lots of good replies, as you can tell many of us had similar experiences. My DH said all the same things that Marthas' did so I didn't go ahead and buy one for several years because of the $$ involved. But when I inherited some money, I didn't share and bought my RV. He has been very supportive though once I got it. Many of my friends though still think I am a little nuts but then they have thought that before about me. :) remember many times dreams go by if you wait to long. Do it you will always wonder if you don't.

Most folks with negative comments aren't fully informed. Most have no clue or have heard one version of RV travel and don't realize the diversity of life this style of living or traveling can offer. Even the ones that do support us don't always understand that when we park in their driveway we really don't need or want to stay in their "guest" room for a special treat..........We learn to love our spaces because....they are our spaces.....

If you have managed to entertain and maintain your life on your own all these years, going on the riad will just give you more choices and things to do and see..... :)

And after a few trips or being on the road for a period of life you discover it isn't what you anticipated you will know and not have to look at regrets for not trying it out. Life is short, go explore life! :)

Heard all those plus "it's not a good investment"! Still have friends who offer for me to stay a few days with them "so you can sleep in a real bed." I HAVE a real bed, and it is a lot more comfortable than their guest room!!!

You just have to ignore them. I am 71 and have been living in my RV for over two years and still love it. And I have not crashed and burned on the freeway or been assaulted or shot. In fact campgrounds are a lot safer than hotels, and our bathrooms are cleaner! And I am not likegoing lonely or bored yet.

So go with what YOU want to do. And then send them lots of pictures of all the places you go and make them jealous

I'm on a sofa sleeper this week while I'm a care giver. Believe me, my bed is much more comfortable! Lots of the naysayers don't have a clue and most cases, if you start traveling and sharing experiences will turn into jealous people and not necessarily less negative. Ignore them. Focus on you and the positive folks.

I am lucky with my friends and heart family -- or maybe I just have them well trained! The boys were the best: Son #1 "An adventuremobile!" Son #2 "I'd drive that into the woods as far as I could go and stay for a while!"

One boy, however, has asked me not to go skydiving. The other one wants to go with me!

thanks you for all the comments and the support. It really is a big help to hear what you all have to say. What is funny, is that none of them ever said anything when I had to climb on roofs for a living - which I did for many years and it is a lot more dangerous!!
I was just a little disappointed I guess --- but with that being said, I am still on the look out for the right RV!

Happy trails to everyone and hope the weather down south improves - here in WI we will just wait till May or June !
