Rooster named Mable

Postby retiredhappy » Mon Dec 08, 2014 12:39 pm

My daughter has chickens which means I get fresh eggs. Nothing you can buy in the stores stands up to really fresh eggs. This is a picture of her rooster named "Mable" who was named before they knew he was a rooster. Now Mable thinks Melissa is his mate. He comes up to her and puffs his feathers out and does a little feet stamping dance and lets her pick him up and love on him. He follows her around the yard like a puppy dog. He is not too fond of the rest of the family, however.

Cute. Showed this to my 4 year old grandson and he said " but some roosters are girls." Innocence. Can tell your daughter is an animal lover.
Thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean about fresh eggs. I raised them as a 4-H project. Started with 50 day-old chicks and kept the 27 females as laying hens. I lived out in the country and the "neighbors" would call me when they needed eggs. I'd jump on my horse and take off to deliver them. That's fresh!!! I had two huge roosters named Hercules and Eurypedes. Unfortunately they met their demise one night in a fox/bobcat raid. :( Thankfully the hens were in the chicken coop. Mable looks so happy with your daughter.

Oh how I envy you for those fresh eggs.
Neat story Sandi.
My grandmothers always had chickens and fresh eggs. I remember getting into trouble as a small child when I found a fox den and brought some of them back to the house (I thought they were puppies and wanted to take them home). Sadly my grandmother had a no tolerance policy toward foxes.

When I was working at the pheasant farm some there didn't know a chicken would lay eggs without a rooster. Just got reminded by this picture and your stories. Seems to me your daughter loves the rooster, too. Mutual admiration. Love it.

One of my co-workers has chickens and was just telling a customer that you don't need a rooster for a chicken to lay eggs, only if you want the eggs to turn into more chickens!
