I know a place in South Dakota with a free campground. Electrical hook-up only. Dog friendly. The campground hostess is just as sweet as can be.

Hey, Pat, that is a small campground with lots of trees, a really sweet campground hostess who has a just as sweet hubbie! South of the Corn Palace. An awesome setup. I have been there, too. Karen, I understand your need for ND on your map, but you can kiss that on the way west. However, you cannot miss this cg hostess!

I agree, do not skip Montana - it's awesome. ND is not big like TX - you can get through it :)

That article is pretty scary stuff. guess I will skip that part of the US for the time being and pray for the good folks whose quiet lives are being turned upside down.

And probably still way less crime than most of our cities see - just new to their territory and not very welcome, I'm sure.

Myself, I've never been to ND but DH has several times for duck hunting. He said it's just miles of nothing and lots of wind--all the time. Did say the folks were friendly tho. At least they were when he went there several years ago. I think he was up near Jamestown? Never did sound like anyplace I wanted to go.
Any day spent in the company of my animals is a good day.

ND has more wildlife refuges than any other state. It is a birder's paradice as Everything migrates thru there.

Cheryl - I'm with Beth on the crime rate. I lived in San Diego for years and you don't think the crime rate was high? They are just having to deal with an influx of people. More people equals more crime. Sometime Google registered sex offenders in the area where you live. You might be surprised. Usually if you stay out of bars and questionable areas of town you're perfectly safe. Just use common sense. Yes, its pretty wide open spaces where I often see beauty just like I love the deserts where a lot of people don't see anything of beauty. Guess its all in the eyes of the beholder.
