According to what I read, it's a false rumor. Check out: http://www.snopes.com/science/cookegg.asp

Here's a question - who's in charge of the info on Snopes ??? They're often referenced here and other places and I was just wondering why they're the place to go for the truth ? I suppose I could go to their website and see what it's about but thought I'd be lazy and just ask here !
Thanks !!

Snopes takes information from people - like if you get an email and wonder if the story is true - they'll take that email and research it. They find out whether it's true or not - and then they write what they find. If it's true, they say so. If not, they say so. In both cases, they give a synopsis of the research behind it. Before passing on most anything, I check Snopes - and in this case it's great - gives the history behind this as well as says who started the popcorn part of it and why- it was a marketing ploy -

I see your point, Trudy. Who checks on Snopes to see if what they are saying is true or not?? ;)
So I wonder how they got the corn to pop then? The picture didn't seem digitally enhanced, but then again, I'm no electronic wiz.

If you read the entire thing, it actually says how they did the popcorn. It was thrown DOWN into the frame, then the frames were digitally enhanced to take out the kernels. And the people who did it admit to doing it and tell why.
