Never been to Austin

Postby BurninDaylight » Sun Oct 19, 2014 6:46 pm

But I've been to OKLAHOMA!

I'm planning on taking the Meatball and heading down to Austin Tx in a couple of weeks and staying a Monday through definitely Thursday and possibly Friday. The plan is to go from Austin to Wichita Falls and drop her off at the dealer where we bought her for her deep winter pickle and to fix a few minor things while still under bumper to bumper warranty.

We have never been to Austin, so would like some suggestions for places to stay. Remember she is a short 40' long and 50 amp, so figuring that a full hook up RV park will probably be where we end up, but if there is a COE that we could fit into would be open to that also.

I would love suggestions also for restaurants and entertainment, as neither of us have ever been to Austin. There is a great storage compartment in The Meatball that perfectly accommodates our golf clubs, so that is on the agenda for at least one day.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, Barb & Kat! This is too funny--well, maybe you had to be "lost in Austin" with Anita & me last winter  We were caravaning, just "driving through," but on a Friday night. Stuck on the interstate, I noticed the city roads seemed to be moving smoothly. Anita, following me, said "okay, let's try it"....OMg! Got into the REAL Fri nite downtown traffic, got separated, & it took Anita & her gps to direct me out of there. I ended up being about 20 mins behind her    Other than that, don't know much about Austin  Hope you have a great time though :D

I passed South of Austin a couple of years ago but it wasn't far enough South. Got caught in the afternoon traffic and we just crept along forever. They were building a toll road from Austin to San Antonio and I think the speed limit on it is 80 mph. If the speed limit is 80 they will be going 90. I told my sister that they must be trying to thin the heard.

There are a couple of nice COE parks on Lake Georgetown, about 30 minutes north of Austin that will accommodate your fiver.....big enough and 50 amp, water and electric, and a dump station. Lots of golf courses around, but I'm not a golfer, so can't advise you. There is an outlet mall and IKEA between Georgetown and Round Rock. Georgetown has a nice square. If you just like scenery, get on RR 1431 out of Cedar Park and drive out to Marble Falls and have pie at the Bluebonnet Cafe. Austin has traffic.

Oh Vonda, thanks for reminding me of the Bluebonnet Cafe. I went to Marble Falls several years ago and bought one of the Bluebonnet Cafe "T" shirts. It was a beautiful T shirt and I loved it. Lost it in the fire, also several years ago. Have such good memories tho. lyn

Austin is awesome! Several optional parks. The COE at Lake Georgetown has a couple. McKinney Falls State Park is a favorite of Diana, Mtngal. There are many city parks around the area and of course there are a few commercial parks. A couple of other nice COE parks located in nice driving distance with one being east and another south. Golf, huh? What's that? Ok someone on here will know the courses.

Plan your route using Hwy 281 west of Austin going south and then take one of the State roads into Austin to avoid I-35. As they say I-35 is only busy between 8 and 8...that is 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. :o

Actually not real stop and go until the downtown/university area which is where you get the upper and lower split of I-35. It is usually stop, stop then creep for a couple of miles. The toll road is the way around Austin from Georgetown to Buda. That is about an hour drive or 70 miles and yes the limit is 80 on most parts, but your ok to drive 85. But Hwy 281 is heavily used as an alternate north south route. I hate 281 but drive it a lot anyway.

You do know that Austin is only about an hour from Kerrville, don't you??????? City of Kerrville Schreiner Park will take your fiver or Guadalupe RV Resort has full amenities and is only about five minutes from my home.

I drove thru Austin. Once. Never ever again. Never! Ever! I've been thru Dallas-Ft. Worth, San Antonio, most all of the big cities in Tx, never much of a problem. I've roamed all over Texas. Never. Ever. Again for Austin.

I lived in Austin past 8 years. Check out Esther's Follies on 6th street, great vaudeville type comedy club. Only Th,Fr,Sa I think. Can get tickets online, sells out usually. Lot of Weird Austin humor. World headquarters for Whole Foods on n. Lamar, everyone that visited wanted to check it out. Capital building and UT campus downtown. May run into Sandra Bullock..she owns Bess Bistro on 6th st downtown and Walton's bakery/coffee shop/florist across the street. Her sister, the baker, designed the menu. Worth a visit. Old Texas cafe food go to Threadgills 301 west riverside. Live music on weekends outside. All the best have played here. Congress street has all the old variety stores and the famous Austin hotel that's on all the brochures and travel shows. Broken spoke oldest cafe with two step lessons, live music And chicken fried steaks that cover the plate. This should get u started. Austin360.com for latest entertainment info.
Enjoy Austin! Johnnie
