my train trip

Good morning what a way to travel I am on the train going to see Peggy in ct. I boarded in helper ut. This am and we are one in grand junction co. It is very comfortable. Next big stop is Denver about 7 pm. Will arrive in ct on Thursday evening

I used to travel a fair bit on Amtrak, I *LOVED* it! Always sat in the diner car with interesting people and had good conversations and pretty good food.

Traveling across Canada or the US by train is one of those dreams on my bucket list......I love to watch scenery and I think it looks different when I am not driving...plus trains take you through country and town in that back ways.

A few months after Sept. 11 and not wanting to fly, I made a quick decision to see part of the country from Amtrak. I got on in Oakland, CA and when we got to Seattle, I stayed overnight in a motel. Next morning I boarded another train and took the northern route to Chicago. I stayed overnight in Chicago and the next day boarded again headed back west through Denver ending up in Oakland again. It was quick, wonderful and I accomplished my goal. I was amazed when we passed a sign saying we were passing my mom's hometown in Illinois. I think a train ride is something everyone should do - and maybe take a little more time than I did.

My family took the train from Chicago to Arizona and back one year. Loved it. Have always thought I'd enjoy an extended trip like that again, but the one time I looked into doing it, I couldn't afford to - flying was much less. Now I enjoy all the little scenic train rides.

Glad you are taking this one - and keep us up-to-date - would love to see some pics!

I rode a train with my grandmother from Wichita Falls, Tx to Galveston, TX to see my Aunt Ruth. I was probably 4 or 5. About all I remember was that our food came in a box and I thought we were having a picnic. I think it was fried chicken. When the Worlds Fair was in New Orleans I rode a train to NO with my husbands cousins for the weekend. We rode in an observation car most of the time but most of what we saw was the swamps of Louisiana. lol I see that everyday.

I watched a show on PBS about a train trip across Canada. I have always thought that I would like to do that. I looked up the cost and it's about $4,000 to $8,000 depending on how many days. I doubt I would ever spend that much on a trip.

Sandi, I love your adventurous spirit - that sounds like something I would do.
I got to take the train from SanDiego to LA (visiting the kids) earlier this year & loved it! I'd probably get a pass (if such a thing exists) if/when I'm out there more. Would love to take the train up & down the coast someday.
Martha, the previous time I was on a train I, too, was 5 - Mom was traveling with 4 of us (2 of which were under 2)! I don't remember many specifics except I think I loved the sounds of the wheels.. always have, always will...

In 1973 I was married with one child and expecting when my family in Wy was in an auto accident
so we took a trip out from Iowa...after the funeral my husband went back to Iowa this was in Nov early Dec..not sure
which that he left to go home...I was there to help in what ever way I could mom was in the hospital 2 brothers at home
and a sister in the hospital...stayed until the dr said that either I needed to plan on having the baby in Jackson or return home
soon!!! She was due in April...had a friend who was willing to take us home don't remember the circumstances but then it feel through
We my eldest dd who was all of 3 at the time and I took amtrac back to Iowa not sure what station but frankly with a 3 year old and being so very
pregnant I shut us up in a berth and didn't see a heck of a lot of anything!!! I sure wish I had...
Something I think I'd enjoy...as the few times I've gotten to take a scenic ride I'd enjoyed it

Donna, keep posting....I loved the trip from San Francisco to San Diego...although had to change trains in LA. That was along time ago...haven't ridden a train in years!

Last year we went to the real Oktoberfest in Munich Germany. Flew into Innsbruck Austria, met up with a couple of girlfriends from LA, stayed a few days then began a two week trek traveling by train. From Innsbruck we went to Munich for the Oktoberfest, then on to Prague, to Berlin, and finally to Amsterdam. That was my first time on trains. What an experience navigating terminals that were multilevel with huge suitcases and no elevators. In every situation where I had to drag that luggage up or down stairs, a Good Samaritan came along and carried it for me and then vanished into the crowds. Was probably the silver hair. You just meet the nicest people.

My train ride was Portland, Oregon to Manhattan, Kansas for Christmas when I was in high school. My parents sat in the middle of the car with my young brother and sister. I had a seat in the back and my seat mate part way was a college girl. We had a long layover in Denver and choirs were singing Christmas songs. I remember absolutely nothing about the trip back to Portland - just realized that. Maybe I just slept.

I'd like to do another train trip but am leary about doing it along the Oregon and Washington coasts - too many mudslides.

Anita, the Amtrak I took (Coast Starlight I think) didn't go along the Oregon and Washington coasts. It went through Klamath Falls, Eugene, Portland and on to Seattle.

Good morning well the train trip is having a few ups and downs when we arrived in Chicago we had to. Take a bus to Toledo Ohio 3 buses full. Our bus had a flat tire and one of the other buses had to. One get us they dud hold the. Train for us ow we are a out 5 hours late. And will be other be not able to make my next.connection so. A.Train k is. Putting me up in a. Hotel in D. C. That's the good part.
