Mine is a droid and have been doing it for years. Except for the two years I was with Verizon. WHen was at a store that sold various phones and plans and providers, they told me the only one that you could do it with and was sanctioned is AT&T.

Way back when I first tethered with my BlackBerry that was critically important to me as I would need to be on the phone with clients and work online working on their websites simultaneously.

I just made a call while I was tethered. And I have done it several times with no problems. Even been surfing the internet while on the phone. I have a new iPhone5.

My recommendation to anyone is that if you already have an older jetpack device, stick with it as long as you can. I am really sorry I got a new one and am going to see if I can get my old one fixed. Tech 2 support lady suggested it might just need a new SIM card.

Another issue to watch with the Verizon MIFI's....when my old one died after 2 years of dependable service I went to replace it. The newest technology which the young man presumed I would want was fine until I notice that it was 4g only. I told him I wanted a unit that would, which like my old one did, switch back to 3g if that was all that was available. I know that the 4g coverage map has grown tremendously in the last 2-3 years but for some of us that wander around parts of PA, WV, TX, and other states with holes in their 4g service, having that flexibility might be useful to stay connected. This summer when I was in WV I didn't have phone service but was still able to get on the internet enough to let folks know I was alive.....just no pictures or speedy service.

We have the air card USB that does the switch back and forth from National Broadband, 2,3 & 4 G depending on where we are...Hence that's how we can get out online sometimes, at the "Summer campground" in PA....we're going to baby this thing that's for sure.... ;)

I just received my AT&T bill - the one for the international wi-fi hotspot that has never worked, not even once. $974.53 Yes - almost one thousand dollars. What should I do? This is the service that I called about 7 times, complaining that it doesn't work. Smoke is coming out of my ears I'm so mad.

Call them. Verizon deleted my charges for data roaming when they first told me it was not capable of roaming.

And always keep it turned off unless you are using it. Let us know what happens.

Just another comment about Verizon... my data usage kept rising and they kept wanting me to tier up to the next level of usage... I had not done anything different on my computer... after several years of using Verizon I simply said good bye to them... I now use Comcast for tv and internet... my charge for a month is under $60.. includes both... the tv granted is a small package but internet is unlimited...

I think I am going to wait until I get to a city with an AT&T store/office, and talk to them in person. They keep telling me via phone that it was working, but it was not. I'm not trying to pull a fast one, and I would be happy to pay a fair bill. But this is ridiculous! I'm in Leavenworth, Washington until Monday and it's a very small but lovely Bavarian-style town in the mountains. The RV park, Icicle River, is beautiful. Don't you love that name - Icicle River! I will be in Spokane on Monday and I'll find the AT&T store there. Hopefully, I will get help with this.

Unfortunately those of us full time on the road cannot get those bundle plans. They also have you at an advantage when you are way out in the middle of nothing as I often am.

Judi, if you can find a corporate ATT store they are more knowledgeable and can be more flexible. Call and ask for location of corporate store. That advice was from one of my students last semester who worked for Verizon.

(Sorry just reread it was not Verizon. )

Keep us updated.

I would think corporate stores would be the way to go whether it is AT&T or Verizon. I know that I have always gotten clearer information and swift service/exchanges/replacements from the Corporate Verizon stores......

Update:

Verizon tech's finally admitted the tablet was eating data and replaced the tablet. New tablet behaves itself and has used only 400 kb off the Verizon network and stays on Wi-Fi like it should.

Customer Service finally got involved and in an effort to put tings right; to replace the 5 GB the tablet ate; they gave me 1 GB a month free for 12 months, 2 free GB's for this month and an additional 2 GB's per month for $10 a month (basically 1/2 price) for as long as I want.

Other than actually exchanging the tablet, the store people were useless.

Yes, Verizon customer service did do right in the end. Wish they would train the Techs to be more customer oriented.

I am making no progress regarding my AT&T bill for service I never received - 976.00 $! I called them again and spoke with a supervisor, who informed me that my hotspot device does not support international service. She offered to reduce the bill to $ 500.00. WAIT! She wants me to pat 500.00 for service I never received??? I called the Oregon Attorney General's office and will fill out a complaint. Unbelievable.

So they want to charge you $500 for service your hotspot is not capable of receiving ??

That REALLY does not make sense!!
