Hi. How long are you planning on being gone? And when do you think you might be leaving? I'm in Oklahoma. Always wanted to go to Alaska.

hey deeann. i was thinking about leaving maybe in mid june or so and be gone a couple of months. i am open to suggestions. the one thing i would really like to incorporate in the trip is taking the alaska marine highway up from either bellingham washington or prince ruppert in canada. it is their ferry system and it travels along the inside passage. you can plan to make stops in the ports along the way and travel as far as you want on it (ie. getting off at Haines and driving into the state or going a little further in like maybe Valdez and getting off there. you have to pay fare for yourself and your rv but when you consider the cost of fuel thru canada and the yukon territory i don't think it would be much different and maybe a little less. you can check out the web site. i have a 24' class c motorhome and 2 cats. what part of oklahoma do you live in? i used to live in norman and lawton which is where i went to nursing school. i live outside of kerrville tx. now. i am currently workamping in vallecito, colorado which is near durango. there are quite a few "okies" that have seasonal homes here.

I live in Tulsa. I haven't done any research yet for an Alaska trip but I'm doing a copy/paste on your post so that I can have that information. I'll let you know if I decide to make the trip next year.

I lived in alaska for 20 years and I have driven in and out quite a few times. I drove out in a 27 ft class c in November once and came back by way of Prince Rupert on the Ferrry in 87. It was the end of January when we returned. It is a nice trip and I believe you would like it. I have driven the Casiar Hwy (I don't remember how to spell that) and the Alcan. Both of those takes 3 days of 24 hr driving to get to the states.

I took the Alaska Marine Highway from Prince Rupert with some friends and loved it. Would do it again in a minute. The trip was so relaxing and in June not crowded at all. We didn't get off and any of the stops though, as we were heading to Juneau and then to Haines to pick up the Haines Highway and head north. The trip to Prince Rupert is beautiful and a beautiful drive. We didn't have an RV with us though, just my Tahoe as we only had a month and no time to monkey around learning how to drive and handle a MH which we would have had to rent and none of us had RV at the time. One thing I will tell you and I don't know if it's changed now or not as it was 2000 when we went, but making reservations on the ferry needs to be done early to be guaranteed the times you want. We made our reservations in December of the summer before. They told u at that time, that when the reservation info is received, they put them in chronological order and start filling them on December 1st. Being we sent ours in October or November, we were #4 in the list and had our dates pronto. If you want to hop off at various points along the line, that takes a bit of planning as you need to decide where you want to get off, how long you want to stay there and then move on. Some people we talked to were doing that and some were staying like a whole week say at Wrangell and then getting a ferry to continue up the line. All kinds of options. If you go back into Liz's blog, she, Tina, Carol and I forgot who else, spent an entire summer in AK and all the places the ywent and stayed are in her blog. Hope you get it off the ground this year. What are you driving by the way.

With gas prices what they are, this is a great year to travel to Alaska. Hope you find someone, or decide to go on your own. You don't be disappointed.

Last June I drove from Oregon north through British Columbia, the Yukon, and then into Alaska. I returned in mid-September. I did that trip alone, and I loved it, bumpy roads and all. There is something enlightening about traveling alone. If you don't have someone to travel with, don't let that stop you! I felt threatened only once, in a big Fred Meyer market in Fairbanks, where a drunk man behind me in line put his hand on my a%#@!!! I told him firmly to back off and that was the end of that. I loved everything about that trip, and would love to repeat it in a few years.

Can't do it this year, but maybe 2016 or 2017.
