Aw, Lyn, so sorry about your daughter losing her dog. It's always so hard.
I lost a cat similarly - had taken him to an emergency vet (holiday weekend) and lost him ... They asked to do an autopsy (no charge to me) and they discovered him riddled with cancer. No signs until the very end. We usually don't find these things out, but the emergency vet I used likes to be able to learn and help the next people better when they come in with similar situations. As you said, we mostly never know - just know that your daughter and her dog had many good years together.
