Daughters Dog

My daughter lost her dog Wednesday. In just the same way that CATZMOM7 (Dee) lost her Bear in April. The symptoms were the same. Westly did not linger tho and died soon after they got him to the vet. Vet had nothing to offer except very expensive tests with no garuntee they would do any good. He was 12 years old and a very, very good dog. I'm wondering if something goes wrong the the systems of these older dogs and everything just shuts down. lyn

Aw, Lyn, so sorry about your daughter losing her dog. It's always so hard.

I lost a cat similarly - had taken him to an emergency vet (holiday weekend) and lost him ... They asked to do an autopsy (no charge to me) and they discovered him riddled with cancer. No signs until the very end. We usually don't find these things out, but the emergency vet I used likes to be able to learn and help the next people better when they come in with similar situations. As you said, we mostly never know - just know that your daughter and her dog had many good years together.

my sympathies Lyn for the loss of your daughters dog. I had lost one many years ago suddenly and unexpected too. Came home from work and she had died. She was still warm so it happened just before I got home, but I called the vet and had a necropsy done on her as it was questionable in my life circumstances at the time. I wanted to make sure she wasn't poisoned. She died
of heart failure, and the necropsy was free as I took her to the vet of the shelter where I got her. Its never easy when we lose them, never.

Life gives us tough choices. We can lose our loved one suddenly and maybe with little suffering on their part or we sometimes watch and struggle with long term decline and roller coaster rides of wondering if they are hurting or knowing that they may be suffering but just hoping that we can soften the discomfort. None of it is easy for our hearts. We do learn to count the blessings their presence in our lives has meant. Those blessings are never weighed out in years.....but carried aloft by memories, lessons learned and joys and sorrows shared.

So sorry for you and your daughter about the loss of her sweet dog. I also lost a beloved dog quickly, she died in my arms before I could even get her in the car to go to the vet. I chose not to have a necropsy so I'll never know exactly what she died from but it didn't make it any less awful for me. I hope your daughter and you can find your way past the pain of this loss and remember good times with her furbaby. {{Hugs}} to you both.

Thanks to all who replied to my message. You are very sweet and understanding. My daughter works (she is a 4th grade teacher) and says it is comforting to go to work and be so busy she doesn't have time to think of her loss. She dreads driving home knowing Westly will not be there. lyn
