Fires

Postby SoCalGalcas » Thu May 15, 2014 5:18 pm

Oh., these fires are horrendous! The localTV stations are showing them live. A propane tank just blew. The winds which we're dying down just suddenly started up again. Residents are out with their garden hoses attempting to save their homes.
Yesterday they brought in a DC10 which holds 6,000 lbs of fire retardant. There are 17 helicopters flying and dropping water. The areas. Where the fire is burning are very hilly. Lots of canyons, with thick chapparol. It is a very sad sight to
Watch these homes burn. Lyn

My older brother lives in Carlsbad in the hills. Unfortunately he chooses not to communicate with me so I don't know his situation. A number of years ago their house was in danger and they were evacuated. Thankfully their 8,000 sq. ft. house was spared. They apparently live in a different house now in Carlsbad and I don't know how they are. It looks like a really bad situation down there.

P.S. Lyn, I sent you a PM on another subject. I wish we got email notifications of PMs like we used to.

Yes, Lyn - the fires are terrible. One of my DIL's aunt posted a link on FB to one of the TV channels out there, so I'm keeping up wih it that way. Praying for the winds to slow down, the temps to drop & some rain to fall. Until then praying for safety for everyone.

lots of coverage here on the fires too, I worried about you Lyn hoping your are far enough away to be safe. Hope the winds
die down and they can get a good handle on the flames. Don't see any rain in sight but ya never know, God just might send
some.

The Carlsbad fire is a bad one. I am not that familier with Carlsbad so can,t give any info on that area. That area is however, becoming contained. Lyn

When I first moved to Texas I was absolutely appalled by the people here building huge fires and just leaving them burning with no one to watch them. After living in California any open fire was a potential disaster to me.

I have relatives in the area - who have been told to evacuate, then told they could go back, then told maybe evacuate again ... not sure the status now. But they are ready and willing to evacuate at any time. My g'f's youngest daughter lives in an evacuation area with her baby (husband in service, out to sea) so I hope she stays safe, also.

Have not found a reason why emails and notices aren't going out - so just keep checking when you check in daily.

Very sad to read about all this! One of the fires (Rancho Bernardo) is just a few miles north of where I was living and working in one of the shops. Another one in Scripps Ranch is in the neighborhood where I worked at another shop. The Santa Anna winds have been as high as 80 mph so the fire fighters don't have a chance to keep up with the fires.

I think there is another fire up near Santa Barbara too.

The heat along the coastal areas is also a big problem since many people along there don't have A/C.

Very scary for those living down there!

Lyn, I imagine you can see the smoke from your place if you are facing north and/or east?

My cousin lives in LA near Watts so he is fine but he is keeping track of his 3 children and their families. His son was at work indoors and had not heard about fires earlier in week and got a call his family might have to evacuate. They are safe so far. It is going to be a bad year all over the state with fuel/brush as dry and vulnerable as it usually is in late summer. Our area of Northern Ca just sent off crews to provide relief but had to hold some back here for prevention here since we are dry and hot as well. They said on news tonight that the only difference right now between Nor Cal and So Cal, fire wise is we are not having the winds. I keep praying all including fire fighters and those who live in area of fires stay safe.
